Steve and Sharon do marry, and it's a surprise to everyone. And that includes them.
It's after a battle. Sharon is breathing heavily, splattered in blood. She's more alive than Steve has ever seen her, and she meets his gaze with a grin.
He's closed the distance before he knows he's moved, his arms around her (mindful, always mindful but he feels like nothing could break her).
"Marry me". He doesn't know what he means to say but that's what his mouth says, and he knows that nothing else could've been the right thing to say.
"What? Now?" she reaches up and brushes gunk from whatever that creature that exploded was and he catches her hand before she can lower it.
"Why not?"
He knows what Sharon is thinking when he says that. Not just because of how long he's known her but because it's the same thing he's been thinking. That this stalemate dance they've trapped themselves in - where they love each other but cant, won't progress - can't continue. That it's all so pointless when they're alive and in love.
That any moment things could change.
"Okay," she replies, with a nod, "let's do it."
despite being a massive sharon fan I've actually only read Brubaker's take on her.
Sharon fans! Where should I start?

June 15 Drabble - Nothing Left to Lose
Sharon Carter, during the Blip, 100 words exactly. Credit to @indigo-jungle for suggesting Sharon Carter. This drabble meets the requirements for the following challenges:
@societynsoelsscribbles June Jukebox Scribbles (Bad Habits by Ed Sheeran--"nothin' left to lose");
@swoon-june (party);
@juneofdoom ("Watch out!");
@marveldrabblechallengeJune Challenge (firsts);
NASA's Moon Joy June Challenge (crew).
Summary: Beaten and hunted, Sharon arrives in Madripoor. She's lost all her faith. Now the only thing left to lose is herself.
The music vibrates in Sharon's head, her heart half a beat off. The club's lights are dizzying, electrifying, shadows jumping here and there and—
"Watch out!"
Sharon spins, nearly falls, breath in her throat, but the woman catches her before she hits the ground.
"Crazy, huh?" she shouts. "First time in Madripoor?"
"Yeah," says Sharon, heart still half a beat off.
"Lose your crew somewhere?"
Sharon thinks of Steve, of Sam, of Ross. Of Brock's gun, pressed her head. "No. Nothing left to lose."
The woman smiles, pulls Sharon into the fray. "Then dance with me!"
Joyless, grieving... she does.

Rooms have a habit of stilling when Sharon enters, like the mere walls become aware an important figure has arrived.
Your breath does the same.
I hate this. I hate this so much. Like, McKenzie's run has overall been a serious step up in quality, and a lot of the choices he makes are really good. But not this one.
So Sharon got fridged. And even though this set of panels is brilliant and full of pathos, she still got fridged.
We don't get to see Peggy's reaction- her own sister.Nick Fury shows up, that's her boss who we've seen has quite the soft spot for her, he doesn't mention her once.
We don't get to even see Steve mourn her very much. He thinks about her again for only one panel afterwards, and yeah I know Steve Rogers is Captain Repression but like, one hardly even gets the sense this has shaken him at all. For fucks sake, he mentions Bucky too, she doesn't even get her own throwaway man-angst thought!
Like I'm sorry but this is fucking bullshit. This is really sad and not the way the writers intended. So much of Sharon's story for the past 137 issues I've spent getting to know her has been having to throw away parts of herself for Steve's sake while he treats her like an afterthought. She's pressured into quitting her job as Agent 13, which she clearly loves, to become Steve's girlfriend. She sabotages her chance to reconnect with her sister because Steve doesn't want Peggy finding out he's dating her little sister. She gets jerked around by him whenever he's dealing with Man Angst. And now she's died in a truly horrific way, self-immolating under mind control, and Steve barely even seems to care.
This isn't even like a fakeout death btw. Sharon doesn't come back for another 200 issues, its only the 90s her death is retconned to have been a fakeout. Look maybe I'm being too hasty, maybe the next issue will show the cast actually having to confront Sharon's death and it'll be shown that Steve not thinking about her is him deliberately repressing his feelings. But I don't have high hopes. This pisses me the fuck off.
