um... what kind of advice would you give to first-time cosplayers? I tried once and failed. Like not normal fail but EPIC fail because evertything was like LAST SECOND.
ohhhh, my very first cosplay ask. Well first off, I would like to say thank you for coming to me for advice! now let’s get down to basics
I know this feel well, i have had my own times when i tried to do a cosplay last second and it just didnt go well. I am also very critical of all of my work so yea. But you always want to consider a few things when deciding to cosplay:
Always plan ahead. You never know when a con may pop up that you want to go to so always have an outfit ready to go in case you dont have that much time
Practice practice practice. You’re never going to get a cosplay perfect the first time around. Hell, I’ve redone my L4D Hunter cosplay 3 or 4 times. Just know that just because you failed once, doesnt mean it was a total train wreck, you got the practice and there is always someone bound to love your outfit!
Always plan out your outfit. Nothing sucks more than planning an outfit and not being able to finish it because of insufficient funds or time (trust me, thats whats killing me now is that I know where to get everything i need for the cosplay but dont have the money). I always like to draw out how i want my outfit to look before hand but that’s me.
Cosplay is expensive. If someone tells you otherwise, they are lying to you. I mean, I pretty much never buy whole cosplays online (and make a decent portion of mine) but even still, its pricey. If you buy online, you are literally going to pay out the asshole for things you could get much cheaper and better quality doing it yourself. But on that note, fabric is just as, if not more expensive as buying the actual clothing piece but finishing one makes you feel that much better
Good will is your best friend. Thrift shops can often have a lot of things that you need and for really cheap, you just have to be patient and keep your eyes peeled.Â
Learn to take criticism. you are going to have your fair share of people giving you shit, ignore them. listen to the people giving your constructive criticism, itll help a lotÂ
Dont be discouraged from cosplaying because of your size, sex, race, etc. Cosplay what you love. If you love crossplaying, cross play the hell out of them! If you;re character isnt your skin color, thats the glory of the rules of the internet.Â
most of all, just have fun with it. Find a group to go with and organize a group to cosplay with. trust me, a fun group makes cosplaying that much more fun, even if you dont think its good.
Honestly, even now, I still get a little discouraged to cosplay in public because of my harshness about my personal quality. When I do, a way for me to get comfortable is that I always arrive to my destination 30 minutes early and walk around, look straight ahead and act like no one else exists. I dont begin to acknowledge anyone until I get my first compliment and then I go all out!Â
Hope this helps! If you need any more help please do not hesitate to ask, I always am willing to give help
