Cavalry Face Mask from England dated to the 1st Century CE on display at the Roman Army Museum in Greenhead, England
This highly stylised bronze face mask was made for a Kalkriese type cavalry helmet. The cheeks feature an incised circular decoration. These masks would have been worn for parades as they limit the wearers vision. It most liekly belonged to an auxiliary cavalry regiment attached to a legion in Britain. The Roman Empire made heavy use of Gaulic and later Sarmation cavalry in Britain to rapidly respond to raids from the Celtic peoples.
