Hi, Iām here to rant about my favorite Horizon: Zero Dawn scene for a second. Remember when Aloy takes down the Behemoth in the Sun-Ring, and she has that long talk with Helis beforehand?
At this point in the game, I feel like the parallel between Aloy and Helis weirdly mirrors Elisabet and Ted Faro when it comes to the āpredestined and preordainedā vs āscrew you, Iāll change the outcome myselfā mentalities. Faro was so caught up in selling robots that he accidentally doomed the earth to die, while Helis is so enslaved to HADES that he canāt see the fact that he is actively dooming earth in the same way. Helis and Faro both believe that they have āpreordainedā for life to fail, but only Helis has fully accepted his role with pride.
But then thereās Aloy and Elisabet. And oooh boy. This is why I love the Sun-Ring scene. We spend all that time in the ZD bunker watching Elisabet work on GAIA, work against inevitable despair of the death of all life. With GAIA, she spits in destinyās face. And we see that same resilience in Aloy. By killing the Behemoth, Aloy breaks the āpreordained destinyā that Helis puts on her just like her mother broke the doomed destiny that Faro put on humanity. But also, by Aloy rejecting destiny, sheās one step closer to filling in her motherās shoes. Itās WONDERFUL. Also, with the cli-fi vibes in this game, VERY fitting.
