Gothtale Mettaton claims that his hedonistic celebrity robot act is ironic. He has no idea what irony actually is, just that it is some intangible quality all True Artists know how to wield. His fanbase is convinced of his "dark and twisted genius" despite all evidence to the contrary anyway.
Under his influence Hotland has become a crumbling industrial cross between a Las Vegas style Den of Vice and Villainy and a hangout for some of the most insufferably pretentious hipsters you will ever meet.
Also, there's no Gothtale Sans. Gothtale Mettaton and Papyrus both fill in his narrative role at different points in the story (with Papyrus being the No Mercy final boss)
