🏛️ The phrase has its roots in the ancient world. Under Roman law, a soldier could legally compel any civilian to carry his pack for one mile, an act of conscripted labor known as angaria. The second mile, then, was entirely voluntary. No law demanded it. No authority required it. It was pure, unrequired giving.
The idiom enters the English language most directly through the Gospel of Matthew: “And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.” What was once a radical moral instruction—to respond to coercion with generosity—has since softened into a workplace platitude, printed on motivational posters and spoken in performance reviews.
And yet something of the original weight survives. To go the extra mile still implies a choice made against the grain of convenience, a refusal to do only what is necessary when something more remains possible. In a culture that prizes efficiency and minimum viable effort, it is, quietly, a countercultural act. The first mile belongs to obligation. The second has always belonged entirely to character. 💪🏅

For #motivationmonday I congratulate anyone who goes and does the “extra”. Congratulations to my oldest baby (yes my children will always be my babies) who just got an award for being a great coach. This past year on top of a full time job, he and his wife also had added responsibilities like having to school from home. It would have been easy to say “I don’t have time or I can’t because.” But Steven said “yes I can” and made it a priority. His children were happy to have him on the field.
