. . . gentleness is stronger than severity, water is stronger than rock, love is stronger than force.
Siddhartha, Hermann Hesse
CASUS BELLI
“So she thoroughly taught him that one cannot take pleasure without giving pleasure, and that every gesture, every caress, every touch, every glance, every last bit of the body has its secret, which brings happiness to the person who knows how to wake it.
She taught him that after a celebration of love the lovers should not part without admiring each other, without being conquered or having conquered, so that neither is bleak or glutted or has the bad feeling of being used or misused.”
― Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha
Siddhartha
Author: Herman Hesse
Book: 1/1
Summary: Siddhartha, the son of a respected Brahmin, decides to retreat from a life of privilege to seek spiritual fulfillment. The book follows Siddhartha’s journey as he begins as a Samana, eventually continuing his journey living different lives and learning from others to understand his place in the world.
Review: This story was unlike any I have read before. The beginning did not engage my interest, however as the book continued I found Siddhartha’s story to be very interesting and intriguing. I had learned a lot through his spiritual journey; Hesse talks about the value and power of love and why so many people willingly fall victim to it. He also talks about the relationships that make up the world: how the plants, animals, sky, rivers, and people all flow together to make one sound that is our world. The pace of the book was fast; each chapter brought a new situation to Siddhartha’s journey which kept me engaged. Hesse’s writing takes the reader on a beautiful journey of spiritual development and understanding one’s place in the world.
