You think that just because you’re one of the top 20 amateur chefs in the country you can waltz into the MasterChef kitchen? In the premiere of Season 6, returning judges Gordon Ramsay and Graham Elliot, along with newcomer Christina Tosi, let the cheftestants know it isn’t that easy.

After bringing out 20 home cooks to claim the show’s signature white aprons, they bring out 20 more cooks, who will compete with them head-to-head. “Steak versus steak, seafood versus seafood, bakers versus bakers,” as Elliot says. Half of them will be gone by the end of the episode.

The “bakers versus bakers” is of note because there will be a focus on pastries this season, thanks to Tosi. She’s the chef and co-owner of Milk Bar, a renowned bakery that sprang from David Chang’s Momofuku kitchens. Baking is much more unforgiving than many forms of cooking, especially with a countdown clock. How many contestants will be sent home for fallen soufflés? We’ll soon find out.

He made the announcement in an entry on his own blog, where he wrote, “As filming comes to a close on the latest series of Kitchen Nightmares, I’ve decided to stop making the show.”

Gordon added that when filming for a new series of Channel 4’s Costa Del Nightmares ends, his time with the network will be over too.

Stating that while in partnership with Channel 4, he’s had “a phenomenal ten years,” he added, “It’s been a blast but it’s time to call it a day.”

As to the facts and figures of Gordon’s reign as the definitive telly chef, he stated that since he began his TV career in 2004, the shows he’s starred in have aired in 150 countries and have been watched by “tens of millions of people.”

He wrapped up his statement by writing, “It’s been memorable! Thank you for watching.”

So what’s next for Gordon? Well, in the post he also stated, “I’ll be continuing with my other shows,” however, he didn’t specify which ‘other’ shows he was talking about. No doubt though we’ll hear more about what lies ahead soon.

Are you sad that we won’t be seeing as much of Gordon on out tellyboxes? I certainly am. I’d watch the man making a bowl of Weetabix to be honest…

But of course, it’s not all been rave reviews and glowing headlines as over the last decade, Gordon has been embroiled in accusations of cheating on his wife Tana, financial woes and fierce feuds with family members, and of course, the ever-present criticism of his foul mouthed rants…

In 2010, while remarking upon Gordon’s onscreen antics, Michel Roux Sr – who provided some of Gordon’s training in the 1980s – told the Guardian that he finds his behaviour “appalling.”

He added, “He’s a good chef, but certainly not one of the best…”

Ouch.
