i love me some color analogies so let’s go with red = girl, blue = boy, and white = neither. someone can be white with a hint of red to create a very pale pink. it’s a small step in the red direction, but you’re still just a type of white. so being a more red-aligned white means you’re comfortable with red aspects (femininity) without considering yourself a vibrant red (a woman). and being attracted to a gender group is like being attracted to anyone in that area of the color spectrum.
in a less metaphorical way, non-binary people don’t belong completely to certain genders but can be aligned to one. nb lesbians are more fem-aligned nbs who are attracted to women and other fem-aligned people.
