Hearing the Voice That Calls Us
âI am the good shepherd. I know my own sheep, and they know me.â John 10:14 Every morning I stop at McDonaldâs. I order a sandwich and a large Coke Zero. I do it so often that the person taking the order hears my voice and immediately enters my drink before I even say it. If I ordered the same sandwich every day, they would probably enter that too. They know my voice, but they do not know me.âŠ

King David, (a shepherd of sheep before God called him to shepherd His people Israel,) desired greatly to show the kindness of God to the remnant of the house of Saul. Having made an inquiry, he sent for, and extended great mercy to Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, the son of Saul. As Mephibosheth, (who was lame in both his feet,) fell on his face, and prostrated himself before David in fear, David assured him with these words: "Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father's sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather, and you shall eat bread at my table continually." David also instructed Ziba, a servant of the house of Saul to work the land with his (Ziba's) sons, and servants, and bring in the harvest on behalf of Mephibosheth." (See 2 Samuel Chapter 9)
How much more did our gracious, and merciful God do for us, when He sent His only begotten Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. Jesus is the mediator of a new covenant, and restores us to right standing before God. "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." (2 Corinthians 5:21)
The gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes. Praise God who has redeemed us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and made us partakers of His divine nature, and all that He has prepared for us now, and in the life to come, everlasting. He has given His church the ministry of reconciliation. O, how He loves the world, and is willing that none shall perish.
Jesus, upon seeing the multitudes weary, and scattered abroad, like sheep without a shepherd, was moved with compassion, and said to His disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." (See Matthew 9:36-38)
The heart of our Great Shepherd is loving and forgiving, full of mercy and compassion, full of kindness and truth. A heart that judges righteously; a heart that wants His lost sheep to come home; a heart that wants both the young and grown sheep tended to, and fed with His teachings. A heart that desires the reaping of His harvest to be done, and His house to be filled. (See Characteristics of a Good Shepherd)

#DailyDevotion Jesus' Sheep Follow Him Joh 10:27-30 27My sheep listen to My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me, 28and I give them everlasting life. They will never be lost, and no one will tear them out of My hand. 29My Father, Who gave them to Me, is greater than all others, and no one can tear them out of My Father's hand. 30I and the Father are one.â There are two great articles of faith taught in this passage. One is the perseverance of the saints and the other is the divinity of Jesus and unity of God. The perseverance of the saints is not a broad sweeping doctrine including all people. It is an individual teaching meant to strengthen individual saints who are in the faith right now. It is there to comfort us when we are troubled, when we are in doubt, when our sins cause us alarm and when there are those trying to tear us away from the faith. The Formula of Concord says, âThat He will also strengthen, increase, and support to the end the good work which He has begun in them, if they adhere to God's Word, pray diligently, abide in God's goodness , and faithfully use the gifts received.â We might note the âifâ here. This promise is for those who adhere to Godâs Word. It is being in the Word the Lord preserves us. Pray diligently, that is regularly and praying what Godâs Word tells us to pray for. Abiding in God's goodness and faithfully using the gifts received means gathering together with the rest of Godâs saints and partaking of the means of God i.e. preaching, absolution, baptism, the Lordâs Supper and the mutual conversation and consolation of fellow Christians. If you despise these things, you certainly arenât hearing the voice of Jesus and following him. But to those who hear and voice and follow Jesus we have these promises especially when it seems as if God is against us and hates usâno one will snatch us out of Jesusâ hand and no one can snatch us out of the Fatherâs hand. Paul says as much and confirms this: Rom 8:33-35 33Who will accuse those whom God has chosen? It is God Who declares us righteous. 34Who will condemn? Christ died, more than that, He rose, He is at the right hand of God, and He prays for us. 35Who will separate us from God's love? Will sorrow, hardship or persecution, hunger or nakedness, danger or a sword?... 38I'm convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers, nothing now nor in the future, no powers, 39nothing above or below, nor any other creature can ever separate us from the love God has for us in Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesusâ hand and the Fatherâs hand are one. They are one because they are One God, One Lord. If you are in Jesusâ hand, you are in the Fatherâs hand. Jesus is distinct but not separate from the Father. Nothing and no one is greater than them. They are a unity. Nothing and no one can overcome the Creator of all. If you are a follower of Jesus, you have his divine protection of persevering in the faith unto life everlasting. Even when it seems God is against you you have his sure and certain word and he is able to carry it out. He does not lie and does not change like us. He says what he promises to do. He will make you persevere unto the resurrection of eternal life. Heavenly Father, Jesus promised that we who follow him are in his hand and in your hand and no one can snatch us from it. Grant us faith to believe this particularly when we are at our lowest points in life so we may not lose hope but be strengthened in it by your promise. In Jesusâ name we pray. Amen Read the full article
