I can't think of people performing facing upstage in the auditorium (aside from the previously discussed circular choreo numbers, plus We Will Rock You comes to mind, that one was all over the place with no real sense of direction for me)... but I definitely know Every Breath You Take is done facing upstage (but in the Funny Girl theatre, not at McKinley)

Hmm I would ask my dad if he grew up with it but hes asleep rn (hes protestant and my mom's catholic, and I feel very much this is something that comes from my mom's side...)

I was raised Episcopal and we never super observed 12th night, but I was certainly aware that it existed, and we take the tree down on the 6th. (It's not like it's hard to count... it's always Jan 6....)
So it is definitely somewhat more widespread than just Catholics! and yeah, it's the same day (unless you're the Church of England who are special snowflakes and insist it's the 5th), not a case of counting.
