Thats an interesting thing you noted actually because Edelgard when she holds speeches and rallies she is shown to be charismatic and the crowd is taken in by her but her supports with most characters are just them being annoyed with her because she's basically just trying to boss them around or force her ideals on them like her Caspar and Linhardt supports.
Yeah that's what I was trying to say. Edelgard is Charismatic but not Charming. She knows how to work a crowd, she has the surface level traits that people look for in a leader but one to one she's... a bit socially inept for lack of a better term. Claude is arguably the opposite, we never really see Claude talk to a large crowd, the largest we ever see is him talking to all your recruited party members, but we do know he's meant to be good at politicking and is able to convince Holst to let the Almyran Army through Fodlan's Locket. Sure even Claude will get on people's nerves one to one but I find more times than not that's him deliberately doing that (ie. His Lysithea Supports and his Ingrid Supports) because he's bored or cause he finds it funny.

Do you think the racism Claude faces is overblown and actually isn't that bad? I've seen a good few people in Edelgard circles claim this is the case but given his upbringing in Almyra and the fact that it's acknowledged that if Claude's Almyran half is revealed he'll be in big trouble are kinda big things to indicate he isn't overexaggerating when it comes to what he's gone through, but maybe I'm wrong?
I mean its hard to tell because we don't actually see his treatment in Almyra, as for Fodlan we know how Almyrans are treated, we have Cyril to show that. So probably not too overblown, at the very least they wouldn't have let him take over running of the Alliance of they knew he was half Alymran.
And well.... we know the Almyrans like to attack Fodlan for fun, we know from Claude's Hilda ending that it took 2 generations of Almyran Kings marrying Fodlan women for Almyra to start "altering their values" whatever that means. Likely it means for them to stop viewing Fodlan as a play thing to poke at for sport.
So neither side particularly likes each other and we know in real life mixed kids experience a unique sort of racism and identity crisis where they don't feel like they belong amongst either of their two races so it's totally likely Claude had a hard time. We just don't see it because the game doesn't care about showing us Claude in his element and would rather he just stand and either give exposition dumps or sit and listen to exposition dumps.
Honestly, my biggest issue with Edelgard is that nobody really challenges her. Claude? Hilda is the least yes-man-y of the retainers, and Lorenz's criticisms are treated as being valid. Dimitri? Felix chews him out multiple times (with the game showing that Felix is right). Edelgard? Hubert is Hubert, and CF!Ferdinand seems more interested on hopping on Hubert's dick. It's kinda sad that AM!Ferdinand (after Deirdru) is the one who gets to do his actual job.
Ok firstly I still can't stand Ferdinand/Hubert and I never will. It completely goes against Ferdinand as a character. I just had to get that out of the way, like I respect people who like it but I just can't stand it, especially when it's portrayed outside of Crimson Flower, like I've accepted The Black Eagles are all out of character in Crimson Flower but AUs that make Ferdinand/Hubert a thing in like Azure Moon baffle me when their only interaction post Timeskip in Moon is Ferdinand trying to somehow save.... Edelgard's life and they talk about Edelgard and not each other.... Like yep super romantic 🤦🏻♀️
But yes, ignoring that tangent, all the other Lords are challenged in some way. Claude is basically having to do a lot of his shit by himself because as you said Hilda doesn't just follow blindly (Hilda is the only retainer who can actually leave her Lord and join another, she's also the only one who isn't an official retainer the way Dedue and Hubert are, Hilda's just a good friend) and Lorenz spends most of the game calling Claude on his super vague explanations. Even the likes of Cyril calls Claude on his bullshit at multiple times.
Dimitri is literally a walking disaster for like a good 8 chapters and Felix makes sure we know about it. Hell Byleth even gets to momentarily be a character and sometimes call Dimitri on his bullshit. Not to mention I believe Seteth gets in a few passive aggressive comments about Dimitri's state.
Edelgard.... Gets worshipped by Hubert, Dorothea wants to write a glowing Opera about how amazing she is, Ferdinand loses all self confidence and suddenly believes she's perfect and he'll never match her, Petra goes full Stockholm Syndrome for her. It's super gross not gonna lie like the one Lord who needs called out the most... Doesn't get called out at all?!

Uh, Rhea never went "outsiders bad" though, I think that part of the doctrine is heavily over exageration of the "Nemesis was a hero who fought evil dudes from the north" false history she created. Not wanting to diss on Claude, but his arc about "opening borders = instafriends with everyone" is myopic. Like, you're the prince of a country who raids borders for funsies, if the locket is opened then... They'll stop raiding? Idk.
Oh I agree. I think its a case of protagonist bias (+ Claude just overall being the most conventionally likable of the Lords), the fandom takes what Claude says as fact because he's our protagonist, and he's nice (even if the original draft of 3H had him as more of a villain protagonist according to the directors which shows that even in the final product we probably shouldn't take everything he says as gospel).
Rhea herself is shown to be welcoming to foreigners, taking Cyril in from the Goneril's, employing Shamir and actually allowing the likes of Petra and Dedue actual attend The Officers Academy.
The Western Church is in open rebellion BECAUSE they think Rhea is too welcoming to outsiders.
But since Fodlan has a history of invasions from outside forces and regular border disputes with multiple neighbours that was going to lead to a culture of fear and distrust of foreigners regardless of The Church of Seiros or Nemesis or anything like that. Fodlan has been invaded by Almyra, Dagda, regular border skirmishes with Almyra and Streng. That isn't going to be fixed by just opening all the borders and letting anyone walk in to raid and pillage.
Now I think the only reason Claude's plan even remotely works is because he manages to get Byleth into position as King/Queen of all of Fodlan and himself as King of Almyra and we're just meant to assume all the people of these countries did exactly what their Monarchs told them to do. Honestly the Femleth/Claude ending is one of the few I can sort of buy this working out a little bit if only because having the Almyrans come in a save the newly formed Queendom of Fodlan at least will get some Fodlanders willing to look at Almyra in a new light and well I don't know how Claude convinced the Almyrans along the border to stop being assholes but whatever 🤷🏻♀️
Summer Lorenz says Rhea’s an "absolute vision". You can't convince me he never tried to have tea with her, since he's looking for a bride and lady Rhea's status would propel his house to the head of the Alliance - but Seteth gave him a death glare. Lorenz received a rant a few months later when Rhea received a red rose, even if Lorenz swore it wasn't him. It was actually Cyril, Claude suggested lady Rhea'd appreciate that flower.

AM ending mural: Dimitri is lowering himself down to be on eye level with orphaned children, people are cheering because they want to cheer. VW ending mural: Claude is standing but so are other people, making eye contact with him as equals. CF ending mural: Edelgard has an angel near her, trampling flags, above everybody else, people don't look too happy except Hubert.
I mean this does almost perfectly sum up each Lords end goals.
Dimitri wants to tackle the inequality rampant in Faerghus/Fódlan with a specific focus on orphans (ie. The kids in his Byleth supports) because he was an orphan (again I wish we got more Rhea and Dimitri interaction because they have so much in common). Dimitri asks Dedue to treat him like an equal, Dimitri spent years living on the streets. Dimitri is a Prince/King who wants to put himself down onto the same level as his subjects in order to better understand them.
Claude's goals and story focus more on forcing people to see the similarities they share. He wants racial equality, but not superiority. He is half Almyran, Half Fódlander. He wants Almyrans, Fódlanders, Dagdans etc to look each other in the eye and work together as equals. He doesn't want to put one group of people above another. It's possible in the original draft when Claude was a villain protagonist that he was perhaps more militant in his push for equality, perhaps willing to subjugate one race who was doing "too well" (like say Fódlan invented something that the rest of the nation's didn't have, rather than try and make it accessable to all the other nations as easily and cheaply as possible, Claude just opted to destroy it in Fódlan because if they all don't have it, Fódlan can't have it) rather than try and prove equal opportunity for others. But in the end they changed that.
Edelgard on the other hand, her goal from the beginning was to conquer two independent nations and situate herself at the top of a continent wide Empire. It doesn't matter if she eventually steps down or not and chooses her successor that's what most dictators do plus we don't know how long she waited to step down plus not all of her endings include the mention of her stepping down and picking a successor at all so some of them just imply she rules until her death and we never know who inherits after that whether it's any kids she had or someone else. Edelgard's entire story is about putting herself above everyone else, she doesn't even like openly taking orders from Byleth while neither Dimitri or Claude voice any issues with that.
