New headcanon: Akira Kogane (Keith anos 80) formula 1 driver
I went to the psychologist today and I showed her Akira Kogane (Keith from the 80s) and she said, "Is he a Formula 1 driver?" I burst out laughing so hard, hahahahahahahaha, "Formula 1 driver," I kept imagining that in a race in an episode.

The Blue Paladins
I wanted to talk about Allura, Lance and Sven as their own respective Blue Paladins. Each Lion responds to an element, and Blue is water. I think each of them represent their own bits of it. For reference, I am using V:LD Allura and Lance. Sven is my own basis based on this blog, which takes a bit of GoLions canon and his cameo in V:LD to kind of blend into one character. We’ll start with Allura, who represents the calmest aspects of water in my eyes. She is reliable as an ally and unwavering. Allura remains serious and on task, often brushing off unwanted distractions from the paladins (see; Lance) with an annoyed look before going right back to her task. Training as a diplomat and as a princess have clearly stuck with her. However, there’s also an edge to her that we see come out most often when Altea or her own friends are in the line of fire, like when she first saw Romelle and heard her explain what Lotor had done. She turned against him in an instant, as she should of, and was horrified. One of her most memorable and emotional lines was when she told Lotor, “You’re more like Zarkon than I could have ever imagined.” Next, onto Lance, who I feel is best placed as water’s fluidity, both physically and personality wise. I mean seriously, that boy can BEND. That one episode where he was ribbon dancing? He’s pretty graceful when it comes down to it. Then there’s the way he acts. Lance is very present in the moment from the first episode, not really thinking ahead. He’s the catalyst for the most important events of the episode. His orders cause the situation to fail, which allows us to see Pidge’s outburst about the Kerberos mission and establish her personal link to it, he decides he and Hunk are going to sneak out to go into town, he changes his objective to following Pidge immediately upon seeing her and is the one who decides they’re saving Shiro (keeping in mind Pidge was definitely thinking about it herself). From episode one, we see that he’s reacting second to second, moment by moment, changing as soon as the situation does. While you can argue most people do this, and you’d be right, it isn’t as quickly as Lance does. Hunk and Pidge, for example, seem to stick to one goal throughout the entire episode, with Hunk’s to try and rein Lance in (try being the key word there) and Pidge to uncover more about the Kerberos mission, alien transmissions, etc.. Finally, onto Sven. With Allura and Lance, I’ve been explaining them as water in its liquid state, but Sven I see as the icy part of it. Putting aside the fact he’s a literal Norseman, which is pretty low hanging fruit, you’ll get quite a few jokes out of him, but only once you’ve gotten to know him. I imagine he almost seemed to have his guard lowered in the episode with the comet around the V:LD Paladins because they were counterparts to his own teammates, the same reason he was so quick to throw himself in front of Lance and take a shot for him. Much like how they momentarily saw him as Shiro when they first saw his face, Sven associated them with those he was friends with previously. It’s frustrating to try to describe, but he is both stoic and like the man we see in that one episode. He’s quiet, but when he does speak, it’s usually either a joke or something he feels needs to be said. There’s not really any small talk with Sven. That’s not to say he’s uninterested in interacting with other people, he just keeps it to himself. It’s the colder, harder to reach aspects of water that Sven represents. I’ll probably rewrite this once I’ve organized my thoughts a bit more, but for now here’s the draft. If you’re curious about my Sven muse or want to rp with me, feel free to DM. I’ll do platonic or romantic pairings, depending, with pretty much any Voltron character.
If you love Voltron, but have to distance yourself from Legendary Defenders for now
I recommend watching Voltron’s predecessors. Below is a list of all of them in order from oldest to newest, with some pros, cons, and where to find them.
King of Beasts GoLion
This is the show that started it all. The original Japanese anime about 5 humans who escape from the evil Galra Empire and pilot a legendary robot to defend the planet Altea.
Definitely the most dramatic show before Legendary Defender. It’s amazing to see the story arcs, scenes, characterizations, and themes that were all but ignored by the American successors until Legendary Defender came along (the Gladiator battles, Daibazaal’s/Zarkon’s slaughter of Altea, Shiro vs Honerva/Haggar, etc.). And in some ways, it goes even further than Legendary Defender.
Not for the faint of heart. It’s not super gory by today’s standards, but it never would’ve been marketed as a kids’ show if the dubbing company hadn’t gone back and re-edited it. The first episode alone shows a guy’s eyeball flying out of his head as he’s impaled by a Robeast.
Also, everyone’s got a bit of a potty mouth. Which is kind of hilarious, when you hear Princess Fala (the original Allura) shouting “Son of a bitch” in Japanese as she fires giant blasters at Sadat’s fleet.
I wish there was a pure English dub of this in tandem with the edited version we got with Voltron. Preferably with the VLD cast, but it would make sense if they had to recast most of the characters (since they are very different from the characters we know and love today).
Currently available on Crunchyroll, but last I knew the first 10 episodes were posted on YouTube with subtitles.
Voltron - Defender of the Universe
The first introduction of the Lions to American audiences, and the one most people think of when someone talks about “the original Voltron”
Between the editing of the footage to remove gore & the inaccurate translations from Japanese to English, the story can come across as discombobulated & campy. But it did give the cast the names we know them by today.
And some of the mistranslations can be unintentionally hilarious.
The American show actually continues past the end of the original GoLion, so the producers had to commission extra animation. And you can tell during the extra episodes that everyone was having a ball making the goofiest thing ever.
I believe the whole show is up on YouTube. But it can also be found on DVD.
Voltron - The Third Dimension
The first Voltron show made from scratch. It sets itself up as a continuation of the original show.
Also the first fully CG Voltron. Unfortunately, it came out at the same time as Reboot, so the graphics are REALLY janky by today’s standards. Not even sure if it would’ve flown when it debuted.
Because it was made in CG’s early days and CG was super expensive, the cast is incredibly small. I think they had 4 actors to voice 10 characters. Including Tim Curry as Lotor and the ghost of King Alfor. Which leads to all sorts of Freudian implications when you watch Allura talk to her dead father about the crazy cyborg alien prince (he was blown up in the extended Voltron episodes, but brought back as a cyborg) who won’t rest until she is his bride.
No Coran (he was replaced with an annoying droid who keeps trying to prove the Voltron pilots aren’t needed, only to wind up with egg on his face when the Voltron pilots have to clean up his mess).
Hunk is there, but only because they needed someone to fly Yellow. He shares a voice with Zarkon and the narrator, so he never speaks.
This is the first version to introduce Pidge as the tech genius, as well as the first time all the pilots matched their Lions.
Also the first version where Zarkon is a good guy.
It only lasted one season, but some of the episodes were uploaded to YouTube.
Voltron Force
A Canada-based show from 2011, it also sets itself up as a continuation of the original Voltron. But it assumes the audience already saw the original, and yet tries to reference a canon that doesn’t exist.
The first time Voltron combined hand-drawn animation with CG, but the integration isn’t the smoothest. This may be the first time the Lions had unique designs rather than being created from the same base design, but none of them look like Lions. Black looks like a rat, Yellow looks like a pit bull, and I’m not sure Red is based on a real animal.
The birthplace for a lot of ideas in Legendary Defender (the Volt Coms can be seen as proto-Bayards, Haggarium as proto-Quintessence, even the Castle of Lions being a battleship)
Three young kids are brought on & trained to be the new Voltron pilots (not sure why they went with 3 instead of 5, but whatever). There’s Larmina, Allura’s niece with absentee parents & a rebel Disney Princess complex, shy & brilliant Vincent, and Daniel. Daniel is the Westley Crusher of Voltron, but without the smarts.
As far as I can tell, Zarkon never appears in the show. Haggar was reduced to evil space goo called “haggarium” and replaced with a weird mad scientist type who uses Lotor to further his own ambitions. And Lotor’s just a generic Saturday Morning baddie.
Hunk gets to do a little bit more than he did in The Third Dimension, and you can see the seeds of the cinnamon roll persona he would come to embrace in Legendary Defender. But it still feels like the writers kept forgetting he was there.
A moment of silence for the casualties of Voltron Force - Keith’s mullet, Hunk’s bandana, Allura’s curly hair, Pidge’s crazy sound effects.
