Day 16 #WEARESTEMSQUAD Today’s topic: Memory ***************** It’s funny how #memory works…memory can bring those “feel good feels” rushing back into your life like wildfire. I can honestly say memory and #laughter are a few of my favorite verbs. This picture represents a lot of #first steps for me. It was Spring of my Sophomore year, and I just began research in the Biochemistry Department of my University. My research project involved studying the patterns of CAG nucleotide binding in Huntington’s Disease patients. Being awarded the #opportunity for this to be my FIRST research project, (many more after being inspired by #autoimmunediseases), I couldn’t have been more excited and privileged. It was the moment I realized that scientists DO make a difference. A BIG one. ****** I was the youngest student, thus far, to represent the Biochemistry Department at the National Convention for Undergraduate Research (NCUR) and the first student of Dr. Lisa Kroutil’s to present my research in Ithaca, New York for hundreds of #students and #professionals. Upstate New York is beautiful if you ever get the chance to go. I don’t know how else to explain it other than the old-fashioned flavor of the cities make you want to wear faux fur (or real fur) and drink low-balls. The look and feel of the old towns are incredibly inspirational. The #cobblestone and the architecture of the Cornell campus gave me a utopius feeling. It was like I was in a dream. “Can I really do this? Can I mentally push myself enough to allow this to be my reality?” The entire ambiance made me off-the-walls excited to pursue a future in science. To me, presenting at this conference was one of the biggest opportunities I was ever given in my life. It reassured me that I was taking the right path and prepared me mentally to dig deep for what I wanted to accomplish. It allowed me to see a glimpse of the “other-side” and help me push through my general classes and start focusing on the wild-side of Genetics and Immunology. Day 1 #WEARESTEMSQUAD So…I just recently became aware that for the Month of March, the badass peeps of #thestemsquad will be posting a picture a day based around a specific theme and today’s theme, is “me”. ---- if you’re unaware of whom I’m talking about its the kickass, sexy, nerdy, taking-over-the-world women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics #womeninSTEM --- First, I want to acknowledge that this is an era where women are increasingly prominent in medicine, law, and business; #career paths minimally pursued before the early 2000’s. But now, 10 or so years later, women are successfully “breaking the glass ceiling” into a new realm of STEM. Making this era, the BEST era of all. Women empowerment is now rooting itself deep within every major career playing field. Women of all ages, races, nationalities, political views, money status, faith, and everything else are creating imprints the world has been patiently waiting for. Why so few women in Science and Engineering? I ask myself this question all the time…because it is true. I remember how much of a struggle it was when I applied for Undergraduate Research programs. I was emphasizing my degree’s focus in #immunology and was analyzing #internship programs that had woman as the PI (Primary Investigator). My enquiry began small (looking at 2-3 colleges) but the more I searched the more I noticed there wasn’t a damn female in sight. 2 female faculty members in the entire Immunology sector…TWO…and that was the trend nearly everywhere. However, instead of feeling discouraged, I felt enlightened. I knew I was about to be a part of one of the most profound movements in Women’s History…and I was NOT alone. A few years later, I decided I wanted to take a leap and completely change careers and enter Technology. I successfully transitioned into a ASP.Net MVC C# programmer and am currently #workingremotely while traveling from city to city --- current city: Mexico City. Now, I know dozens of chicklets who are making monster waves in the STEM community and paving the dusty trail for future women like “me” in STEM. #wearestemsquad #womeninSTEM #research #immunology #programming #globecoder (at Condesa)
