The Virgin Suicides (1999) dir. Sofia Coppola
Need this in my house NOWWW
So after such a long gap, my period finally came the day before yesterday… and OMG it was brutal. The cramps were insane, I literally stained my uniform (mortifying 😩), and now my back hurts like crazy. Can someone tell me why periods have to be this dramatic?
Is it just me, or does Girlstuff/Boystuff seem kinda like a rip-off of The Weekenders? Not only does it have that same kind of 'kids hanging out and visiting the mall/arcade/whatever' vibe and was produced AFTER The Weekenders, but one of the characters, Reanne, is written to be not only vegetarian but 'the smart one'. I understand that while these two traits can co-exist in a character without them being a rip-off of somebody else, I can't help but feel that she's essentially a poor Tish clone.
There's just something about this show that makes me think it took a lot of its characters and plot from The Weekenders, probably because the show wasn't all that popular, not even in the USA, where it aired.
Speaking of which, Girlstuff/Boystuff wasn't even made in the USA or for the USA, which means that the 'hey, you can't do this' laws for copyright are likely different. It's why shows like Block 13, The Samsonadzes, and Miracle Star were allowed to be green-lit in the first place, despite being obvious rip-offs of popular USA property. Not saying that the similarities would be enough to get the book thrown at it, but it'd probably raise a few questions if it was produced in the USA.
