“The guard arrives. Hans steps back away from her, so that it doesn’t seem he might make for the open door. She steps out. The door is closed behind her, locked. She looks back to Hans. ‘I’ll see you soon,’ she promises him. Then she lets the guard lead her away. As soon as she’s out of the prison, she makes her way up to the palace. Her sister greets her with plans to turn the main plaza into an ice rink, a celebration that all of their citizens might partake in, a symbol of how the gates will never be closed again, of how things are going to change. It’s a beautiful dream. A beautiful distraction. ‘I’ve made my decision about Hans,’ she interrupts her sister, almost surprised how steady and firm her voice comes out.”
