The hallways of Padua High were louder than usual.
Students hurried from class to class, lockers slammed shut, and conversations echoed through the corridors.
Normally, you'd be laughing with Cameron during passing period.
Today, though, you barely looked up from the floor.
Your backpack felt heavier than usual, your thoughts even heavier.
You hadn't been sleeping well. Schoolwork was piling up, every assignment felt impossible, and lately every time you looked in the mirror, all you could focus on were the things you wished you could change.
You figured if you smiled enough, no one would notice.
Except Cameron always noticed.
He spotted you walking past his locker, your shoulders slumped and your usual smile nowhere to be found.
"Y/N?"
You looked up.
"Oh... hey."
He frowned.
"You okay?"
"Yeah."
It came out a little too quickly.
"I'm fine."
Cameron tilted his head.
"You've said three words to me all day."
"...I've just been busy."
He gently reached for your hand.
"You don't have to pretend with me."
That was all it took.
Your eyes immediately filled with tears.
"I don't know what's wrong with me," you admitted quietly. "I've just been... stressed. Everything feels like too much lately."
Cameron's expression softened.
"You should've told me."
"I didn't want to bother you."
He looked genuinely surprised.
"Bother me?"
You shrugged, avoiding his eyes.
"I just... I haven't really been feeling good about myself either."
He stepped a little closer so the busy hallway faded into the background.
"Can I tell you something?"
You nodded.
"I know when you look in the mirror, you probably notice every little thing you wish was different."
You blinked.
"But when I look at you..." he smiled softly, "...I see my favorite person."
A tear slipped down your cheek.
"Cameron..."
"I'm serious."
He squeezed your hand.
"I see someone who's kind to everyone, even when they're having a bad day. Someone who works harder than anyone I know. Someone who makes me smile just by walking into the room."
You laughed weakly.
"I don't feel like that person right now."
"That's okay."
He brushed a strand of hair behind your ear.
"You don't have to feel your best every single day."
The bell rang, sending students rushing toward their next classes.
Neither of you moved.
"You know," Cameron said, "how about after school we skip the studying for one evening?"
You raised an eyebrow.
"Skip studying?"
"I know. Very rebellious."
You smiled for the first time all day.
"We can grab milkshakes, watch a movie, or just sit by the lake. Whatever helps you breathe a little easier."
"And you'll listen to me complain?"
"For as long as you need."
You wrapped your arms around him without another word.
He hugged you back immediately.
"I've got you," he whispered.
You rested your head against his shoulder.
"I really needed to hear that."
He smiled.
"And if tomorrow's still hard..."
You looked up.
"...We'll get through tomorrow together, too."
For the first time in days, the weight on your shoulders didn't disappear completely—but it finally felt a little lighter.
