Milestone Monday
On this day, January 24 in 1908, the first Boy Scout troop was organized in England by Robert Baden-Powell, kicking off what would become a world-wide scouting movement. To commemorate this occasion, we present selections from the The Best from Boyās Life Comics no. 1, published in October of 1957 by Gilberton World-Wide Publications of New York in conjunction with Boy Scouts of America. Gilberton is best known for publishing the Classics Illustrated comic book series. Gilberton published five Best from Boyās Life comic books from 1957-1978 before discontinuing the series. Boyās Life incorporated a comic section in 1952, and the comic book brought together strips that were serialized in the magazine, like Bible stories, āSpace Conquerors!ā and āThe Tracey Twins,ā as well as featuring āscouts in actionā and how-to strips.Ā
Boyās Life (now Scout Life, reflecting the new gender inclusive direction of the Scouts) is a monthly magazine founded and published in 1911 by George S. Barton in Somerville, Massachusetts. By the end of 1912, circulation for the magazine reached 65,000 and Barton, faced with knowledge that Boy Scouts of America was considering starting their own publication, sold Boyās Life to the organization for $6,000. We are currently in the process of cataloging a large donation of Boyās Life magazines from the late 1950s so keep your eyeās peeled for more scouting content in the future!
Our copy of The Best from Boyās Life Comics is a gift of Joan Tarachow.

The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of Horror Comics: A Basic History
In the Beginning
Depending on who you ask, the answer may vary on the origin of horror comics. Mike Howlett, a horror comics history scholar, would tell you to look back to December 1940 for the comic based on Mary Shelleyās Frankenstein. This story was published in āThe New Adventures of Frankensteinā from Prize Comics #7. Individual horror comics could possibly trace their origins to the comic adaptation of Robert Louis Stevensonās Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde appearing in Ā Gilberton Publicationsā Classic Comics #13 in August 1943.
Looking back even further, DC Comics decided to get in on the fun with Dr. Occult in the 1930s. Eerie (1947) from Avon Publications is championed as the first horror comic series with original content. However, it is Adventures into the Unknown (American Comics Group) that claims the title of the first horror comics title since 1948.
From then on, the genre continued to spread and evolve with mixed reception.
