Gifs of the city - Dargah Hazarat Nizamuddin . . . Every Thursday evening the Nizami brothers sing live sufi qawwalis at the dargah. In the magic, the art, the atmosphere and in prayer, the performance takes one beyond the structures of religion and into the space of spirituality.

Gifs of the city - Dargah Hazarat Nizamuddin . . . The Dargah is mausoleum of the Sufi saint 'Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya'. People from all religions or even non religious people like me visit the place. Outside the Dargah are several flower and food shops who offer 'shoe keeping' service and provide cloth to cover your head to enter the Dargah. The evening call beckons people to gather to offer their prayers. A narrow lane takes you to the entrance and the once you enter the premises the Dargah provides its humble and peaceful shade to all who come there to seek answers.

Gifs of the city - Street Encounters. . . . Me- 'भैया एक अमरूद कितने का मिलेगा?' . Vendor- 'एक ही चाहिए? एक किलो ख़रीद लो।मेरी बोहनी (first sale of the day) हो जायेगी|' . Me- 'अभी मैं इतने पैसे लेके नहीं आयी।' . As I said this and looked at him, he took one guava and sliced it into four pieces. He added some salt and chilli mixture and handed it to me. . Vendor- 'चलो कोई बात नहीं। ये मेरी तरफ़ से।' . And with a huge smile he went on into the street making his distinct calls again. If you keep the stereotypes away, Delhi is actually the city of big hearted people. May not be polite sounding or courteous or refined, but if you ask for a grape they won't hesitate to give you the full bunch. 

Gifs of the city - street encounters. 'अमरूद पचास रुपये, संतरा चालीस रुपये, केला चालीस रुपये only madam' . . . While describing the price and quality of fruits to me, the fruit vendor becomes them.

Gifs of the city - The fruit vendor. . . . Inside the lanes of any urban village in Delhi you will find the fruit vendor. He often finds interesting ways of yelling out the names of fruits he is selling. He walks around with his cart letting people in the colony know that he has fruits to sell. After a round he sits in his usual spot and people get out of their houses to buy the fruits. A sales method that remains unchanged since ages.

Gifs of the city - change. . . . I made this gif last year when the 1000 rs notes were still relevant. I was buying fruits from a vendor and he didn't have change for 1000 rs. And he asked me 'छुट्टे नहीं है मैडम ?' Oh! the irony. I don't even need to say.

Gifs of the city - Thursday Markets. . . . There are many urban village areas in Delhi that organise a shopping fare every Thursday. An area around the village is predefined and every Thursday vendors from various parts of Delhi set temporary shops to sell their goods. Often you would find people returning from work on their two wheelers scooting around picking groceries to take back home. My friend and I went to these lovely markets religiously every Thursday with our own cloth bags and brought back fresh groceries for the week.
