The feeling isn't new—it's a chronic, cold prickle starting low on your spine and spider-webbing up. Even in the dead silence of your house, the hairs on the back of your neck seem to stiffen, not from a draft, but from an undeniable, unseen gaze. It’s a physical certainty that you are not alone. You whip around, movements sharp and desperate, yet the space behind you is always empty, save for the echoes of your own sudden turn. All you catch is the dissipating shiver, the only proof of the surveillance that always retreats just before you can see it.
The new house on the edge of town is quiet—too quiet—and Juno has noticed. My orange cat has become utterly transfixed. It’s not just that she stares at me; it’s the way she stares. Her eyes are perpetually locked on a specific, invisible point just above my head, as if watching a persistent phantom perched on my shoulder. This constant, unnerving focus—something she never did in the apartment—is making the hair stand up on my arms. The knowledge that whatever she sees is always gone the second I look is driving me to the brink.
Until today.
Opening the apartment door after an infuriating day at work—my boss had been impossible—I was greeted by Juno. My orange cat ran up, affectionately rubbing against my legs. "Hello there, pretty girl," I murmured, dropping my bag and coat to pick her up. Her purring, which I hadn't heard in days, was instantly comforting, as if she knew what I needed.
I settled onto the couch, holding her close to finally unwind. Surprisingly, she wasn't staring above me; she lay contentedly in my lap. The peace lasted only a few moments. Suddenly, her fur stood on end, and a low, guttural growl rose in her chest, fixed on the dark hallway leading to the bedroom and bath.
As my eyes followed hers, the familiar sensation washed over me: the chilling feeling of being watched. That was it. I had reached my limit. When I stood up to confront the hallway, Juno wanted no part of it. She scrambled from my arms and bolted under the couch, leaving me alone to face the darkness.
I go for the hallway light switch, but before my fingers could reach it, something cold brushed against my hand. I stumbled backward, ready to fight, but before I could shout a warning, a sudden, icy breath ghosted over the back of my neck. I spun around—nothing. Only silence answered, followed by a soft, amused chuckle echoing in the darkness.
“I’M TIRED OF PLAYING YOUR GAMES! SHOW YOURSELF!” I roared.
The only reply was Juno's hiss, which grew ragged and louder beneath the couch. Following her frantic gaze, I scanned the living room, settling on the opposite sofa. There was nothing there... until a shape began to ripple and solidify, slowly fading into existence. Standing where the empty air had been was a man.
I stared at the man who had just materialized in my living room. He offered a faint smile.
“Well, hello there,” he said.
I felt myself instinctively stumble back, and before I could move or speak again, my vision went sharply blurry, and I passed out.
