And I—and I go out without hope, without purpose, and return home the same as when I went.

"I love him, his shoulders, his angular, stooping figure – and at the same time I see behind him woods and stars, and a clear voice utters words that bring me peace [...]."
— Erich Maria Remarque, from "All Quiet on the Western Front" (translated by A. W. Wheen)
as much as gretchen am spinnrad is a beautiful piece and wonderfully sung by so many talented singers, it does slightly take me out of the story when a heartbroken fourteen year old girl has the vocal talent of a classically trained opera singer

— Kassandra (1983), Christa Wolf
Lots of people see Charlotte as shallow, but I think there’s more to her than that. She’s given up any childhood she might have had for a gene that she never carried in the first place. Now she’s cast aside in favor of her cousin, who’s never had the spotlight before. That doesn’t justify the bitchy behavior, but Charlotte is a character that I can empathise with.
