In 1946 the U.S. Red Cross sent a humanitarian aid to Austria. Clothing, shoes and other objects loaded in a car were handed over to one of Austrian children houses.
Life Magazine photographer Gerald Waller immediately noticed the 6-year-old boy named Werfel. The Austrian child had hold tight the shoes given to him, and could not conceal his happiness.
