This is a 1986 #Topps #GeorgeBrett All-Star card. Gee, why is it signed right across his face? In 1986, while attending #EmersonCollege in #Boston, I would sometimes get autographs outside the hotel visiting teams would stay at while playing the #RedSox. This particular day, I got most of the #Royals team to sign, but the great George Brett was proving elusive. The unwritten rule at the hotel was autograph seekers couldn’t go inside the hotel lobby, but outside was fair game. Well, one of the collectors — there were only about four or five of us there that day — spots Brett in the lobby. We all go inside. Security was not thrilled and wanted us out. Brett begrudgingly signs for a couple of the guys while in full stride — saying nothing and clearly not happy about people bothering him. I hand him this card and he looks right at me — never stopping as he walked really quickly toward the door and with venom dripping in his voice asks — “Aren’t you a little old for this?” He then looks at the card and purposefully writes directly across his own face, hands it back to me with a scowl and continued on his way to #FenwayPark. I was 19. I can’t even imagine what he would say to me now. 🙂 (at Dover, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn463lhHdNI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1fdh2t9o4r94r
