Boy Better Vote: Why My Generation are Voting Labour
I’ll be the first one to admit it, I don’t get politics. Growing up, I never fully understood or had much faith in any political leaders or parties.
2 years ago I was adamant that I would never vote. Like a lot of young people that don’t really have a lot of insight into how politics works, I didn’t think me voting would make a difference.
As far as I was concerned, when it came to politics, voting and the ruling party, it really felt like it didn’t matter which way I decided to vote, it was always the same thing: more cuts and higher taxes.
But over the last 18 months I can honestly say I have a greater appreciation for those who dedicate their lives to the running of countries.
Voting to leave the EU was never an option in my eyes. Having frequently studied, lived, loved and shopped across Europe, it never crossed my mind that other people wouldn’t see the rest of Europe as an extension of the UK.
12 months on, here we are hoping for the best trade deal as our economy currently depends on the single market and faced with another election - The General Election.
If there’s anything I’ve learnt from the EU Referendum it’s that the power is in your hands.
As a 24 year old graduate, I know that across the board everything that I invest in now will shape the rest of my adult life.
Voting for the next British prime minister is no different.
Having moved to the UK in her early 20’s, my mum has always told me Education is the best thing she could give me for me to have the tools to equip myself for better life.
However, university has left me £35,000 in debt, and with career prospects slimming, the universal dream of being a homeowner without relying on intergenerational wealth is quickly shifting from slim to none; and Jeremy Corbyn seems to the only party leader as concerned about what younger generations are walking into as we are.
Granted, one vote alone may not make a difference, but if everybody is to use their one vote there would be no choice but for those in a position of power to yield to the masses.
It’s too late to register to vote now, but I implore you to do your research and use your vote to invest in your future; I definitely will be.
Tomorrow I’ll be using my vote, alongside thousands of other young people, to give Mr Corbyn and the Labour Party the chance to help give mine and future generations of educated, dynamic and international Brits a future worth investing in, in the UK.
