The Byzantine Empire Is Restored with the Recapture of Constantinople
On July 25, 1261, a major turning point in medieval history took place as Byzantine forces recaptured Constantinople from the Latin Empire. Led by the Nicaean general Alexios Strategopoulos, the city was taken with surprisingly little resistance, restoring Byzantine rule over its historic capital.
The fall of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade in 1204 had shattered the Byzantine Empire, with the Latin Empire ruling the city for nearly six decades. In exile, the Empire of Nicaea preserved Byzantine traditions and eventually launched the campaign that would bring the imperial capital back under Greek control.
The recovery of Constantinople marked the return of the Byzantine Empire, with Michael VIII Palaiologos becoming emperor and founding the Palaiologan dynasty. Although the empire would never fully regain its former strength, the event became a symbol of Byzantine resilience and survival.
