Strange Tales #85, June 1961. Stan Lee script, Jack Kirby pencils, Dick Ayers inks, Stan Goldberg colors, Artie Simek letters.
Info from Grand Comics Database
The anthology comic Strange Tales 85 was published with a cover date of June 1961. The issue introduced many, mostly single appearance, characters. It was the first appearance of Gargantus, created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby. Besides original material, it had a reprinted story from Spellbound #30. The issue was not renewed for copyright so has become public domain. ("The Real Gargantus", "Gargantus Part 2", "New Glasses", "The Man Who Fell", "The Ape Man", Strange Tales 85, Marvel Comic Event)

Gargantus
The aquatic monstrosity known as Gargantus lives in the deep cavern many leagues under the sea. Â A scientist named Dan Parmenter created a seep sea submersible that was able to travel further down than any man made device ever had. Â It passed so far down that it awoke the massive Gargantus from his slumber. Â Curious, the creature followed the submersible to the surface world. Â
Exploring the world of man, Gargantus ran amok as its massive form knocked down building and proved entirely resistant to the efforts of the military to repeal it.  Ultimately, the creature fell unconscious being unable to breath outside of the water.  Gargantus’s body was eventually moved back into the ocean where it regained consciousness and swam back down to the depths.
Gargantus would eventually return as part of an attack orchestrated by The Mole Man.  The Incredible Hulk, The thing and Giant Man battled Gargantus and other monsters, ultimately defeating the creatures by trapping them in the negative zone.  The creature first appeared in Strange Tales #80 (1960). Â
I’ve postulated that there’s a potential “monster belt” loosely centered on Earth’s tropical zones…

I love the (highly effective) strategy of “just throw magnets at it.”
