To your question:  “Professionalism” can mean many different things in many different contexts.  As a general rule, a mare who acts professionally will avoid untoward displays of enthusiasm and will eschew the common pony practice of “freaking out” in either joy or sorrow.  A professional mare will conduct herself with grace and decorum, come what may.  The professional mare also knows how to remain on-task and to not be distracted by goings-on in her environment.  If a spontaneous group song begins in the professional mare’s presence, she will not join in, as such practices are untoward.  If a spontaneous group dance begins, the professional mare will also decline to join in.  Gamboling is anathematical to professionalism.

So, as you spelunk the Abysmal Abyss, yes, it is important that you remain professional at all times.  Assess all members of your spelunking team before you begin.  Do any of them have the tendency to break out into spontaneous song and dance routines?  Take a long, hard look at that team member and ask yourself if their qualities outweigh the liability their lack of professionalism poses.
