What is Galeotto?
The version I’m using here is the Longfellow's and he doesn’t translate this term. This Because is a bit difficult to express in verse what it means.
Galeotto means, literally: “the lover intermediary/ the one who led to the act”
Archaically, the word meant “pilot or sentenced to row in the galleys” while nowadays means “Prisoner, rascal or villain” (usually joking).
The word derives from the ancient French Galehault, the character of various novels of the Bretton cycle, which favours the loves of Geneva with Lancelot.
Galeotto fu 'l libro e chi lo scrisse, is a very common expression in Italy (As a lot of expressions used in the Divine Comedy) and is usually used to express something that led us to an act, or to a result.
It is used as a quote or you can modify the phrase, the important is that you start with Galeotto.
Example:
“I met my girlfriend casually because I accidentally spilt my coffee on her coat.”
“Galeotto was the coffee and who split it.”
“We became friends because we were classmates at school.”
“Galeotto was the school and we who went there.”
