the “you are going to make it out of there alive” really hits different,

the entire album is about a childhood of abuse but it’s told in the past tense, as someone looking back and it has the song ‘this year’ to which the chorus is “i am going to make it through this year if it kills me.” and is more or less an anthem of survival and the album ends with ‘pale green things’ which is about the complex feelings of grief and anger when an abusive family member dies. 

He’s found rain brings out the morose in both of them. Grey skies and cold weather bringing up bleak moments that linger in old wounds until they ache. Already muted day melting into one amalgamous moment. 

In no way is he immune from it, book open in front of him but page left unread. Pitter patter of rain on old glass drumming out each word that tries to rise into focus. When Peter’s arms wrap around him he’s startled well and truly. Foot tangling in the stool rungs and startle racing up his spine in a shake. He nearly bites his tongue. And the soft huff that escapes is more surprise than bark. 

But rather than words Peter rests his head on his and after a moment he lets the question of why go. Rain somber around them and the air thick with the dampness that comes. Feel the creak not just in him but in Peter. The grind of bone and the weariness he knows well that makes Peter’s arms heavy and his chest labored.
