My Champions League Thoughts: 4/28/21
1) If anyone thought I was exaggerating when I said Werner wasn’t a clinical finisher, there you go. 😬
2) Karim Benzema not playing for France is a crime. They don’t really need him, I know, but it’s still a crime. What a goal. 👏🏾
3) My father never encouraged me to stand in one spot juggling just to see how long I could keep the ball up. He always stressed taking the minimum number of touches necessary to bring a ball under control to either pass or shoot. As he was taught, ball control was about setting yourself up to do what you want to do next. Anything more was simply vanity and would get you smashed by the opponents (see: Neymar 😂). Benzema’s goal reminded me of that philosophy and clearly it’s pretty sound. 😉
4) That corner for the Marquinhos goal was simply 🔥🔥. When the ball comes in at that height, at that pace, you won’t see it until it’s in the back of the net.
5) If Pep’s finally learned not to overthink and just does what’s been working for them the entire season, there’s no reason why PSG goes out. That’s a true in football/true in life lesson: if it works, there’s nothing to think about, just execute.
6) If Pochettino doesn’t win with this current squad, I’m not certain he’ll ever win it with PSG, despite having Mbappé. He won’t be able to assemble another squad of Galaticos any time soon with the club needing to recover from pandemic losses and the number of aging players they’ll need to replace in the next 2-3 years. Aging players inevitably lose a step and the only thing worse is having multiple players hit the wall at the same time. We saw happen at Arsenal with Lacazette, Aubameyang, and Willian...it hasn’t been pretty.
7) City reminded us all why they’re one of the few teams who have actually earned the right to even be considered to play in a Super League.
