Sacrae Symphoniae: Canzon septimi toni a 8, C 171
Programme notes: Bach the European 3 March 2019, Philippe Herreweghe 31 March 2019, Iain Ledingham 5 May 2019, John Butt 23 June 2019, Laurence Cummings Bach BWV 106, BWV 19, JC Bach Es erhub sich ein Streit, JC Bach Ach, daß ich Wassers genug hätte Gabrieli Canzoni, Bach BWV 50, BWV 34, Marcello Concerto in D minor, Monteverdi Beatus vir Palestrina Missa sine nominee, Bach BWV 80, Bodenschatz Excerpts from Florilegium Portense Duke’s Hall, Royal Academy of Music.
Dammit, I like Gabrieli’s brass choir music so much and I don’t know whether it’s actually, in any quasi-objective sense, good (and before you come at me for this, let’s reflect on the fact that certain pieces in the Western art music canon are definitely just generally regarded as good, and disagreeing with that means not that you are wrong but that you have Unusual Taste), or if I just like it because it hits all my aesthetic sweet spots (brass, counterpoint, baroque cadences) or even just because I have fond memories of playing it.
Anyhow, here’s a nifty short piece:
http://www.gabrieli.com/discography/a-venetian-christmas-music-by-g-gabrieli-and-de-rore/
"Featuring the works of Giovanni Gabrieli and Cipriano de Rore, Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort and Players present an impression of the First Mass of Christmas in St Mark’s as it might have been celebrated in Venice around the year 1600."
(I wish I had discovered this album in time to share it with you all for the first Mass of Christmas Day.)
