What made you interested in lichens for the first time?
Lichen wasn’t even on my radar until I took a class trip to the southernmost forest at the tip of Chile, which has a lot of lichen biodiversity. We did a pilot study on lichen and the ozone hole, and I thought the lichen there was pretty neat. Then when I got home, I was like, wait lichen is here too that’s cool. And then it wasn’t long before I realized that lichen is almost everywhere.
When I got into mycology, lichens were always my little pet project. I still can’t believe I’m studying it in grad school and that I found an advisor who is encouraging me to make videos and books about lichen.

My mini quilt stickers are finally listed in my online shop! They're 1/18th scale of a quilt I completed two years ago! The background is transparent so it can float seamlessly onto whatever you stick it on.
The original quilt is a labor of love, made from mixing a base of three primary color fiber-reactive dyes and hand dyeing raw cotton fabric to achieve a unique rainbow palette. The dyed fabric is then held in a hexagon shape and sewn using a hand-sewing technique called English Paper Piecing. This artistic vision was inspired by color-mixing from my formal painting background as a multi-disciplinary artist.

I've finished quilting the entire center section which has been relatively easy despite the many twists and turns because I'm following the horizontal zig-zag...BUT NOW I'm trying to continue the zig zag pattern into the surrounding area (to expand the texture), but it's getting tricky because if some lines aren't at the correct angle, it will throw off the rest of the pattern. So I'm trying to work carefully and I'm using a hexagon paper piece as a stencil to guide the machine as I sew. The last picture is the completion of my first line, which will act as my guide for the continuing length.
Note: I've also attempted to use some of my washable chalk pencils to draw this pattern on, but it's not working (lines are too faint and will ultimately be too hard to follow).
I've been trying to put a few vintage scientific illustration mushroom stickers in recent orders just for fun. You can find them in my mushroom online shop here! If you like to put stickers on your reusable water bottle, they're small enough to fit between bigger stickers...aka the perfect size! I have them on my water bottle they're definitely a conversation starter and gateway to meet other "mushroom people"!
The step before trimming the edges and adding a contrasting bias tape to the edges. You can see in the bottom left corner there isn't enough fabric to cover the bottom corner so I had to trim the top and bottom red strips a little shorter than I had hoped. I left the sides a bit wider but I had originally planned for the entire border to be the same. I think it ended up being okay as a "design" choice because it honors the horizontal shape and kind of makes sense.
