Sour Candy
Summary: Tyler Owens x Fe!Reader -> You and Tyler have known each other most of your lives, so what happens when you finally admit your long harboured feeling for each other?
Disclaimer: This does contain swearing and smut (towards the end) so 18+. A lot of fluff, mutual pining, oblivious idiots. Brother's best-friend/ best friend to lovers. Tyler helps reader with prom-trouble, mentions of anxiety, tornadoes, reader being an EMT, blood and minor injuries. Mostly fluffy moments between Tyler and Reader. Also, this is a long one -- kinda takes place over ten-ish years (starting from senior prom). Not fully proof read.
Youâd known Tyler since you were a kid. When your brother was in the fourth grade and he brought home a scrappy blonde kid who introduced himself by shaking your fatherâs hand and handing your mother some flowers heâd picked from the side of the road on the way home, you saw your brother had a friend for life.Â
A good one.Â
And it was only proved time and time again.Â
Of course, they were still boys so you couldnât join in all of their games. But youâd still sneak to your bedroom window to watch them play cowboys in the backyard when you should have been in bed.Â
Stuipd older brothers getting a later bedtime.
However, as you thought back, the time when he proved it without even trying was during your senior prom.Â
For weeks youâd been looking for the right dress. Youâd tried on at least forty with your mom over the course of two weeks, another ten â some repeaters â with your best friend, and a further fifteen with your brother.Â
Heâd stomped into your room when you were in the middle of completing extra credit for your chemistry class.Â
âCome on,â he said.Â
âWhereâre you goinâ?â
He just stood by your bedroom door with a hand on his hips. A look youâd see often when he finally had his own kids. âYouâve not picked out a dress yet and your prom is in three weeks. Mom says I need to help you find one.âÂ
You looked back to your homework. You were almost finished.Â
âIt can wait. Come on. Letâs go.â
Two hours later you were inside yet another dress store trying on different dresses.Â
âI thought girls were meant to be excited when dress shopping.â
You rolled your eyes from behind the changing curtain as you wriggled another dress up your body. âWe do. I know I do butâŠitâsâŠâ You grunted as you pulled the dress up. Was each one getting heavier?Â
âWhat are you doinâ, ridinâ a bull in there?â
Eventually you pulled the curtain across and picked up the dress as you walked out and turned to look in the mirror. âItâs exhausting.â
âSo why not just pick one? What about this one?â
You turned in the mirror a few times, considering it. Then shook your head. âNot this one.â
âIf youâre not that bothered, why not just-â
âBecause itâs gotta be perfect,â you turned and told him. âI know people party at college but Iâve already seen some of my assignments. Iâm gonna be swamped if I wanna pass with honours. This is the last night I get to beâŠfree? I want it to be perfect.â
So, for the next thirty minutes, you tried on more dresses until finally your brother knocked on the curtain.Â
âKnock, knock.â
âWhat?â
âDonât bite my head off.â He stood back and held up a dress. âTyler said try this one.â
You held up the hanger before looking back at your brother surprised. âTylerâs here?â Peaking your head around the corner, you spotted him standing leaning against the wall across from you. âHi.â
âHi,â he drawled, a slight grin on his face. âHe said he needed back-up. Try it on.â
âI think Iâve tried on every-â
Your brother pushed your face back inside your dressing room, along with your dress. âJust try it on.â
You sighed and did as he said. Another day, you might have fought him on it. But you were tired. And hungry.Â
Letting the other dress drop to the floor with a heavy thud â you were thankful to be out of it â you let out a long breath before finally unzipping the dress and trying it on.Â
It went on easier than a lot of the others, and it didnât feel as restricting. Finally opening up the curtain, you walked out and stood on the small step up before looking at yourself in the mirror.Â
And for the first time you had that smile slowly growing on your face. The feeling your mom had told you about. The giddiness and excitement to put it on again.Â
âSo, is this the dress?â You looked into the mirror and found your brother and Tyler stood back. Tyler had his phone out, recording the whole thing.Â
You nodded. âThis is the dress.â
âHallelujah!â Your brother threw his arms in the air and turned around. âIâll go and tell the cashier.â
As your brother disappeared, Tyler closed his phone and slipped it back into his pocket before sauntering over to you. âGlad he called me?â
You smiled, turning to look at him. âVery. Remind me to bring you instead of him when I chose a wedding dress.â
Tyler chuckled and looked back at you through the mirror. âIâll be there.â
Little did you know, the week before your prom, your opinion on the prom would do a complete 180.Â
âA-actually, I donât think Iâm gonna go.â
The dinner table went silent. âWhat?â
âI donât think Iâm gonna go.â
You parents exchanged a long look before looking back at you. âWhy not, honey?â
âIâŠI just donât feel like it, sâall.â
âAre you sure thatâs all?â Your dad asked. âI thought you were excited to wear your dress?â
You nodded in a slight panic. âI am. I am. And thank you for getting it for me. Itâs justâŠI donât want to go anymore.â
âWhy not?â
âJust because.â
That was the only answer your entire family got out of you all week.Â
âSheâll come back around. Maybe itâs just her cycle.â
âKeep the appointments, just in case.â
Your mom nodded. âI will.â
A week later however, you were lying on your bed staring at your ceiling. Your mom had still taken you for your hair, make-up and nail appointments. Even if you werenât planning on going, the nails would last you a few weeks and your hair would last a few days. The make-up was just a bonus. And it wasnât too much. It could pass for day make-up with something a little extra.Â
But you still werenât going.Â
Your brother had tried talking to you, as had your parents. Theyâd called your best friendâs house to ask if she could come round and help but she wasnât home.Â
So, they had to call a last resort. Or rather, he showed up at your home.Â
âWhat yâall doinâ down here?â Tyler appeared at the end of the hallway, finding your mom, dad and brother either stood or sat outside your door.Â
âShe wonât come out of her room.â
Your brother tilted his head. âTechnically we havenât tried to get her to come out but sheâs been in there since she came home.â
âShe had any food?â
âWe picked something up on the way home,â your mom explained.Â
âTyler, son, do you think you can try and talk to her?â Your dad asked. âShe might talk to you.âÂ
Tyler nodded. âI can try. She still fixed on not going?â
âWe think so.â
Tyler nodded and slowly they all disappeared down the hallway and downstairs. Tyler knocked twice.Â
âY/n? You in there?â
There was no answer. But Tyler waited.Â
âIâm gonna open the door in ten seconds if I donât hear a reply. For all I know you could be dead-â
âItâs already open.â Your voice replied from inside. And slowly, Tyler turned the knob before opening up the door. âIâm here.â
âHi, sweetheart.â
âHey.â
You just turned and looked back up at the ceiling. And Tyler closed the door behind him before leaning against the wall beside it for a moment. Your room was clean. Like post-exam, anxiety-flurry clean. The window was open with your net curtain softly billowing to outside. Your dress was hung up on your clothing divider in the corner of your room and you were laying on your bed, staring at the ceiling.Â
âWanna tell me whatâs been goinâ on? One minute you're excited for prom, planning every last detail and now you justâŠdonât wanna go?â Tyler slowly walked over to you.Â
âThatâs about it. Yeah.â
âMind if I join you?â
âNobodyâs stoppinâ ya.â
Tyler laid down beside you on your bed, turning to face you for a moment before reaching over and wiping away one of the small tears from the corner of your eye.Â
âYou wanna tell me whatâs really goinâ on with you?â Tylerâs voice was soft when he spoke to you, waiting for you to answer. And for a while, you thought about it.Â
âPromise me you wonât tell anyone.â
âItâs between you, me and these four walls, sweetheart. Like always.â
You smiled at that. Over the years, as much as Tyler had been your brotherâs best friend, heâd been there for you, too. One afternoon when he and your brother were playing hide and seek, heâd climbed the tree only to find you sat against your bedroom window in tears. Heâd slid it open, crawled inside and hugged you. He was the first person to know you were getting bullied at school. He was also the first person to help you through your science homework when you got stuck with it and the first person, outside of your family, who you knew you could go to for just about anything.Â
âWell,â you took a breath. âI found out my best friend not only stole my date for prom, but is also now dating him.â
âWhat?â
Three months before prom, youâd been asked by one of the guys in your school to go to prom together and you were ecstatic. Not only had you harboured a crush on him for almost two years, but heâd noticed you and wanted to take you to prom. He didnât have a girlfriend, he hadnât been dared to ask you out or some other kind of bullshit. Heâd asked because he wanted to take you.Â
Only, your best friend, whoâd known since day one about your crush had been sneaking behind your back and just over a week ago youâd caught her texting someone and smiling like an idiot at her phone. It was after she told you she had to go to work that youâd gone to the local coffee shop to pick you and your mom some drinks up. That was when you saw them. Sat in the corner, talking to each other before your best friend leaned over and kissed him.Â
That was when it clicked with you that the guy sheâd been so secretive about for the last two weeks was your date to the prom.Â
âShit. Y/n, thatâsâŠâ
âFucking unbelievable? I know.â
âThatâs why you donât wanna go to the prom?â
You nodded. âKnowing theyâre both there. I justâŠI donât wanna.â
âYou shouldnât let them ruin your prom night. You can still have a great time.â
âOh, itâll be wonderful. Sat in the corner for the entire night.â
âLook,â Tyler reasoned with you. âJust go for an hour. And if you hate it, Iâll come and pick you up and we can sit in the Walmart parking lot for a couple hours so your folks think youâre still out having a good time.â
You looked over at Tyler. âYouâd do that for me?â
He nodded as easily as breathing. âOf course I would.â
Ten minutes later, you were finally putting your dress on. âWait, Ty- can you zip me up? I canât do the rest without my hair gettinâ caught.â
Tyler turned back from your door and walked across as you turned around. Holding it at the bottom, he was slow to pull it up and when heâd finally finished, you turned around only to be met with his gaze.Â
âYou look beautiful, darlinâ.â
You felt yourself smile, if with a little blush. âThanks.â
Then he stood back. âYour momâs probably gonna want pictures.â
You nodded. âI know. Meet you downstairs?â
âIâll be waiting.â
You took a few moments after the door closed to find your breath again. Puberty had hit Tyler like a freight train after middle school. And along with his town's fame of climbing the bull riding ropes, so like every man and woman in town, you haven't failed to notice how attractive heâd become. But it wasnât just that. The feeling you got in your chest when he looked at you could rival any tornado that had torn its way through the fields.Â
But then you reminded yourself of who he was to you. Your brotherâs best friend, secretly one of your best friends.Â
Nothing could ever happen there.Â
Your mom took plenty of pictures of you and both your brother and Tyler drove you to your prom.Â
âWant me to kick his ass?â
âI can give him an alibi,â Tyler added, looking over his shoulder at your brother before looking back at you in his passenger seat.Â
âNo, thatâsâŠthanks guys. But Iâll be okay.â
âWell, youâre my sister. The offer always stands. Twenty years from now? Or twenty minutes? Just give me a call.â
You chuckled. âThanks.â
As you hopped out of the truck and headed inside the venue, your brother climbed his way over the seat and into the front all the while Tylerâs eyes never left you.Â
âYou wanna head to the batting cages?â
It took a minute before Tyler realised someone was talking to him. You really did look beautiful.Â
âOh, uh, no. I canât tonight, man. Iâve gotta help my mom with the attic.â
Your brother just nodded. âFair.â
Tyler drove your brother home and just as he hopped out of the truck, reminding him about the rodeo training next Thursday, a text beeped from Tylerâs phone.Â
âSee you later, man.â
âSee ya!â
Once your brother was finally in the house, Tyler looked at his phone.Â
I know you said an hour-
It had been forty minutes.Â
But I think Iâd rather spend tonight in the parking lot than here.
Tyler smiled at the text. Heâd hoped youâd have fun but he couldnât lie. Having you prefer the idea of wasting a couple hours in the parking lot of the grocery store with him made his heart beat faster than usual.Â
Once his truck pulled up, he found you already sat on the steps outside. Spotting him, you stood and quickly rushed over to his truck.Â
âIs everything okay?â
Tyler could hear the music beating from inside just before they announced the King and Queen.Â
You nodded, hopping into the other side. âThank you.â You surprised Tyler by leaning over the truck bench and hugging him tight.Â
He hugged you back for a moment before you sat back down.Â
âAre you okay? Did something happen?â
You chuckled. âYou have no idea. But Iâll tell you once Iâve got ice cream.â
Tyler drove to the twenty four hour grocery store twenty minutes from the venue. Inside, he was quick on your heels as you rushed to find the frozen section. You called out two of his preferred flavours and he picked one. You grabbed two tubs before rushing to the party section and picking out some spoons. By the time you got to the checkout, Tyler handed over the cash before you had a chance to.Â
And sat on the back of his flatbed, eating ice cream under the parking lot lights and the stars, you told him everything that had happened in the ninety minutes heâd been gone.Â
You told him how youâd found your other friends and for a while it was fun, until they walked in. And for a while it was calm until after twenty minutes things went from zero to sixty. Your date had tried to apologise to you, along with your ex-best friend. They told you about how so in love they were and how it was just meant to be even though they never wanted to hurt you. After that, chaos kinda ensued. Youâd told them how it had hurt and planned to leave. That was when youâd text Tyler.Â
But then your ex-date caught you outside. Heâd apologised and told you your friend had surprised him that day in the coffee shop since he thought he was there to discuss you. Then he tried to make a pass at you. But youâd put a stop to that before his hands could touch you. Then your friend found out about the pass when her date went back inside with a reddened cheek and stormed outside. It all kicked off before the teachers came outside to break up the fight and took them all inside.Â
âI was just thankful to get out of there.â
âI donât blame you but if youâd have told me-â
âYou would have stormed inside and done more than what I did. Tyler, I handled it. Itâs okay. But, please donât tell my brother. Or my folks. I donât need anyone starting a duel to defend my honour or some shit.â
âOkay, but if he ever so much as looks in your direction again-â
âThen you can do with him as you see fit. Just nothing illegal. I donât want to visit you in prison.â
Tyler chuckled. âDeal.â
Neither your folks or your brother knew what actually happened on your prom night. Just that you had a good time. You never told them that Tyler had picked you back up or that youâd been sitting in the parking lot eating ice cream before he asked you to dance.Â
And Tyler, as promised, never told them.Â
That night, despite its beginnings, was a memory you cherished. And continued to do so.Â
Little did you know, your future held so many more.Â
Just a little over five years later, youâd long since finished your degree and had gone on to work as an EMT. Tyler had also graduated from college himself, swapping out getting his head stomped on by bulls for learning everything he could about the weather and chasing tornadoes.Â
However, despite work, there was something neither of you missed. And that was the yearly road trip to your parents cabin. It was surrounded by rolling hills and was at least forty minutes from any small town stores. And since Tyler had indirectly joined your family when your brother met him in fifth grade, he and his family had been invited to join each year.Â
However, where you would usually travel with your folks and your brother, your brother was travelling up with his girlfriend and you didnât feel like third wheeling your parents.Â
âYou can ride with Tyler,â your mom told you as she turned towards Tylerâs mom who was sitting with her at the kitchen table.Â
âThatâs a brilliant idea!â His mom replied. âOh, itâll give you kids a chance to catch up.â
âI donât mind driving myself-â
âWhatâs going on?â
Tyler's mom smiled up at him as he walked inside and kissed her on the cheek. âWe were just saying Y/n could ride with you. Thereâs no point in all of us taking our cars and itâll give you kids a chance to catch up.â
Tyler just smiled. âDoesnât sound like a bad idea.â
âYou sure?â
Tyler nodded. âWant help packing your stuff into the back?â
You didnât know why you were a little shocked. This was Tyler. If he was anything with you it was helpful.Â
So, the next day just as the sun was starting to peak out over the fields, you all clambered into each of your respected vehicles and started the seven hour drive to the cabin.Â
It took all of an hour before you and Tyler started talking about the two things youâd both been avoiding for the last two days. Talking about your break-ups.Â
You knew Tyler had been dating a girl heâd met at the rodeo. Sheâd been working at one of the food stalls with her family for years and once he started college, theyâd run into each other. From what you knew, they seemed deeply in love.Â
Until two weeks ago when your mom let it slip over your weekly phone call that theyâd split up.Â
You didnât quite know what to say at the time. There were a lot of mixed emotions; why did they break up? Was it for good or was it just a break? Did she break up with him? Why would she? No girl would ever get much better than Tyler. Or did he break up with her?Â
Meanwhile, a week later youâd come home to a surprise break up. Your boyfriendâs things were all packed up and he was waiting on the sofa for you to come home. Youâd asked what was going on and then he dropped the bomb on you. Heâd lost feelings for you, a few months ago, but couldnât find it in his heart to leave you. You asked if there was someone else and he denied it. And, to his statement, he was yet to post a new girlfriend on any social media page.Â
Youâd unfollowed him, but your roommate from college was keeping tabs on him.Â
âDo they know yet?â
You looked over at Tyler. âKnow what?â
âThat you and Richard broke up.â
You looked at him, a little shocked. âHow do you know?â
âYouâve been avoiding the questions, same as me.â Tyler told you. âDoes anyone know?â
You sighed and shook your head. âYouâre the first.â
âWanna talk about it?â
âYou wanna talk about yours?â
Tyler shrugged. âThey say itâs better out than in.â
âThey also say that about a fart, but you know.â
Tyler chuckled at your statement as you turned and looked out of the window at other cars passing by on your right.Â
âDid she break up with you?â You asked, turning back to look at Tyler. You didnât want to talk about yours much, but you still had questions about his.Â
Tyler was quiet before he nodded. âYeah. Iâd kinda seen it coming. We hadnât been talking as much as we used to and it wasnât like a comfortable silence either.â
âHow are you feeling after all of it?â
âWell, it hurts, but Iâm gettinâ there. How about you?â
You shrugged. âI donât really know. I think Iâm more hurt I didnât see it coming. JustâŠcame home and he told me heâd lost feelings for me months ago. Worst part is, I didnât even notice. But the more I think about it, the more I noticed what Iâd missed.â You took a deep breath. âBut, thereâs nothing I can do about it now.â
âDo you still love him?â
You thought about it for a long moment and Tyler couldnât ignore the slight stabbing pain in his chest as he waited for you to answer. Did you still love him?
âAsk me again in a month.â
Tyler just nodded.Â
The rest of the drive covered almost every topic of conversation twice and not once did either of you get bored. Every couple of hours Tyler pulled into a gas station and youâd take a break. You had offered to drive but Tyler had declined. You didnât quite know why since you had driven his truck before.Â
âReady to go?â
Twenty minutes later on the road, you and Tyler were in a relaxed conversation when the sky started to change. It had gone from a cloudy blue sky to a swirling grey colour that seemed a lot darker in the distance.Â
âIs that?â
You leaned forward, pulling your seatbelt with you in order to look out of the front window.Â
Above the sky in front of you, you watched the clouds swirl around itself before a small vortex started to slowly lower down.Â
And you were mesmerised.Â
âWow. Thatâs beautiful.â
Tylerâs eyes turned from the tornado to you. And he couldnât look away. The traffic had come to a stop, waiting to see if it would land on the ground or not. And still, Tyler couldnât take his eyes from you. And in that moment, his mind took a mental picture of you. One that would pop up over the years just before heâd fall asleep.Â
The tornado might have been beautiful but youâŠ
You were gorgeous.Â
Your expression both intrigued and mesmerised at once. Before, youâd looked a little sullen, still grieving your relationship. But now, sitting there, looking at you, Tyler saw you alive. It was the same look in your eyes that you used to get when you were all kids. Excited, eger, ready. That last time heâd seen you look like this was at your graduation. Heâd heard it in your voice when youâd call him every once in a while and heâd ask you about your job.Â
But he was finally seeing it again.Â
However, he didnât have a chance to look for too long because you were turning to look back at him just as the wind started to whistle outside. Most of your family were long past the tornado so they would be safe.Â
You watched Tyler, watching the tornado. You didnât know what he was seeing but whatever it was, he was calculating something. And without another word, he turned his engine back on and turned his truck off the highway.Â
Suddenly, Tyler was driving past the speed limit down a backroad. Far behind you, the sky only seemed to grow darker and the wind was only getting louder.Â
âTyler-â
âCarsâll only start flying. Itâs safer out here but we need to find someplace in case it decides to shift.â
He was right. You knew he was right.Â
At the end of the backroad, it wasnât too far from a motel and community swimming pool. Tyler threw on the handbrake before you both hopped out and ran towards the office door. The darkened sky was travelling in your direction.Â
âDo you have a shelter?â
The owner behind the desk looked around just as the shutters outside started to rattle. âYes, I do. Follow me.â
âIs anyone else here-â
âIâll take care of it.â
From behind the desk, she pulled a fire alarm that rang out through the entire motel. Then everyone started running, following the owner to the storm shelter a little further out in the field.Â
Tyler made sure you were in front of him as the doors opened up and he helped you down inside before helping the others. And for a moment, that felt like too long, you were slowly slipping into a panic. He wasnât inside yet.Â
But when he was and the owner slipped the bolts across the door, you hugged him tight.Â
âHey, come on. Stay down here.â
Without a second thought, Tyler pulled you down to sit on the floor behind one of the shelves.Â
âHopefully itâll just miss us.â
You just looked up at Tyler as he looked back at you, your hands tight on his shirt as his arms wrapped around you. The wind only started to get louder. Someone screamed when the door rattled and everyone got down and held onto anything they could just in case.Â
But Tyler just held onto you.Â
Tyler could feel your hands trembling as you held onto him. So, raking a hand down your hair, he held you closer. âWeâre safe, sweetheart. Itâs gonna be okay.â
By the time everything went deadly silent, you didnât know whether it was because the tornado had stopped or if you had lost all sense of hearing. Your heartbeat had been drumming in your ears after hearing Tylerâs voice close to you.Â
âWeâre safe, sweetheart. Itâs gonna be okay.â
However, when you all started to finally emerge from the shelter, rather than a feat of destruction, you found the grassy fieldâs upended, some stray pieces of fences and spare garage parts â none which looked close to being from one car itself. And the tornado had swung around the entire motel itself.Â
By the time you and Tyler loaded yourselves back into his truck, he turned and looked over at you. âYou okay-â
You hugged him. Just like you had done when he came and picked you up on Prom night. You held him tight.Â
âThank you.â
He held you back, his hand rubbing up and down your back for a moment. âYou okay?â
You sat back and nodded. âYeah. I think so.â
Tyler watched you for a moment before reaching into his glove box where he pulled out one of the packets he bought from the gas station. âHere.â
âWhatâs this?â
âSour candy. Theyâll help with the nerves.â
You just looked at Tyler perplexed.Â
âThe sournessâŠit helps distract the brain from any anxiety. Supposedly. Not quite sure if doctors have written medical journals about it butâŠitâll help.â
âThanks.â
Tyler nodded, âGet your seatbelt on. We should be able to make it before dinner.â
Driving back towards the highway, Tyler had to double back on himself before finding a new way out. By the looks of it, not too many people had gotten hurt. Some bumps and bruises but the tornado had done most of its damages on the fields.Â
With an extra hour of traffic on top of your estimated arrival time, Tylerâs truck pulled up outside the cabin just as the smell of a barbecue floated down from the top deck.Â
âWhere did you kids get to?â
âItâs a long story, mom.â You kissed her cheek as she came running outside to meet you and Tyler.Â
âDid you get lost?â
Tyler shook his head, âTornado hit us after the second pit spot. Had to take a detour.â
âOh, my goodness. Are you both okay?â
âWeâre fine, mom. Just tired.â
In the days that followed, you kept your eyes on news articles talking about the tornado that had hit you and Tyler. He explained everything he knew about them, and after a ride into the small town and a pit stop at a coffee shop, you decided to pull up some videos of Tylerâs tornado chases.Â
Your brother had told you about it in passing, but youâd thought heâd been kidding. You knew Tyler had put together a team and in the summer months would drive up and down tornado alley, chasing each tornado they found.Â
But you didnât think it was anything like what you were watching.Â
You didnât think it was anything like what you got caught watching.
âPretty cool, huh.â Tyler appeared over your shoulder, placing a coffee cup down beside you. You hadnât even heard them call your name. Had you really been that distracted?
Tyler then stepped around you and sat across from you.Â
âDo you really do this for a living?â
Tyler nodded. âPretty much. I teach a couple community college classes in the off-seasons. Presented the weather a couple times for the local report. But, itâs looking good so far.â
âHow do you do it? How do you drive into one of these things?â
Tyler felt something in his chest bloom as he saw how you looked at him. Intrigued. Plenty of people had judged him, called him an idiot for doing so. But they were also the same people who called him an idiot for being a bull-rider.Â
âWell, how do you run into a crisis to help people?â He asked you. You were an EMT. He knew that. Heâd also heard some of your terror stories, as well as the funny ones.Â
âBecause itâs my job.â
âArenât you scared when you do it?â He asked you and you shook your head. âWell, thatâs what itâs like. You donât face your fears. You ride âem.â
You felt yourself smile. âAlways with the cowboy wisdom.â
Tyler just smirked and you felt a small chaos of butterflies in your stomach. âIt came with the hat.â
By the time that stay was over, you were a lot more relaxed than you were when youâd first arrived home. And your heart wasnât hurting as much as you thought it would have been.Â
âYou should come with me.â
âWhat?â You turned and looked at Tyler, unsure of what he meant since neither of you had talked for about an hour. Youâd just let the country songs on the radio wash over you both as cars sped past you both, clearly in a bigger hurry than you and Tyler.Â
Part of you was glad he was taking his time getting back home. There were still plenty of hours left on the road without any traffic, but the time away with Tyler had made you realise something. You missed him. His smile, his voice first thing in the morning before coffee, his company over said coffee.Â
Unknown to you, he was purposely taking his time. Heâd missed you too, and heâd be damned if he rushed what time he had left with you.Â
âYou should come with me,â he repeated. âUs. My team and IâŠâ He checked the road in front of him before looking back at you for a moment. âWeâre gonna be chasing again soon. Thereâs meant to be an outbreak in Tornado Alley soon. You should come with us.â
âTyler-â
âJust think on it,â he told you, his eyes secretly pleading with you to consider it. âIâve seen you watching our videos. And some of our rivals, which Iâm gonna ignore, but-â Tyler smiled. âYou should come with us. I think youâd really enjoy it.â
Tyer knew he would.Â
You watched him, looking between you and the road. Youâd probably never tell anyone out loud, but you wanted to. It was true â since that tornado hit the motel, youâd felt yourself getting hooked. The thrill you felt in your bones, the laughter that encapsulated your lungs before things became serious. It was the same thrill that made you want to do your job.Â
But there was also the other thing.
Tyler.Â
Youâd have this time with him, in his space. With his friends. Within his life. Even if just for the day. Youâd be with him, without the watchful eyes of your entire family. You wouldnât have to worry if your brother spotted just how differently you looked at Tyler compared to other guys. You wouldnât have to worry about your parents worrying about you â they worried enough about you and you were the one that helped people. Being an EMT puts you in a myriad of different situations, everyday. And they not only liked Tyler, they trusted him.Â
And so did you.Â
So, you said yes.Â
A little over four years later, you were still with Tyler and his team. Not only that, you were a part of the team. It had taken one season of chasing with them to know you wanted to do it again. So, taking as many extra shifts you could away from tornado season, youâd join them on the road in season.Â
Bumps, injuries, cuts, bruises, splinters â anything and everything â you fixed. Whether it was for the team or if it was for the general public when the team would head in to help with the aftermath, you helped out where you could and who you could.Â
âShit,â
You sat up from the camper chair. âWhat? What happened?â
Boone appeared from behind Tylerâs truck, holding out his hand to try and see it in the light better. âSplinter. I think.â
Putting down the beer, you stood and walked over to him. âLet me see.â Boone placed his hand up right in your palm. âYeah. Kate, can you pass me the zipper kit?â
From the side of your camper chair, she handed it over to you. Zipping open the hard case, you let it rest open on the side of Tylerâs truck before taking out a pair of tweezers.Â
âReady?â
âYeah, just say- ow!â
You smiled, holding up the wooden splinter. âGot it.â
âWhat happened to a countdown?â Boone said before sucking on the side of his finger.Â
You just looked at him. âLast time I gave you a countdown you pulled your hand away and I had to get Dani and Tyler to hold you still.â
âThatâs because it hurt!â
âWell, itâs out now. Just be careful.â
Boone nodded. âI will. Thanks, Doc.â
You smiled, packing your things away. âYouâre welcome.â
Twenty minutes later, you heard your name being called from the balcony of the motel.Â
âHey, Sweetheart?â
You looked up and found Tyler leaning over the balcony.Â
âCan you come up here a second? I need you forâŠsomething.â
You didnât like the sound of that âsomethingâ so grabbing your travel med bag from the back seat of his truck, you headed up to his room.Â
You knocked on the door twice before entering. âTy? You okay?â
âI donât want you to get mad-â
âWhat did you do?â
Tyler fully emerged from the bathroom and held up his hand and you gasped. âTyler.â
âIt was purely an accident. I was trynaâ fix one of my truck parts and it got caught.â
âJesus, come here. Tyler, this is deep. Are you sure you just caught it?â
Tyler nodded, hissing as your fingers pressed lightly into his palm. âYes. Ow, hey, that hurts.â
You sighed, pulling him back into the bathroom behind you. Accidently slamming the toilet seat down, you twirled Tyler around you feeling his fingers brush against your back as you pushed him to sit down. Throwing the tap on, you shoved his hand underneath it and held it there.Â
Muttering to yourself as you cleaned up his wound, Tyler watched you. The attentive and focused look in your eyes. Every now and again heâd hear you repeat his words, doing an impression of his voice, quietly under your breath and heâd laugh. This hadnât been the first time heâd gotten hurt, and he doubted it would be the last. But if it meant he got this time with you; the quiet moments, the mocking tone out of worry masked by anger, the ability to take a long lasting mental image of you before the imprint of you on his skin and heart sunk deeper.Â
Then heâd put up with the pain.Â
âQuit it.â
âQuit what?â The soft smile from Tylerâs face didnât drop.Â
âLookinâ at me like that.â
âLike what?â
âLike you lo-â You managed to stop yourself before you said the rest of the sentence out loud. Like you love me. You knew he would reply and your heart wasnât ready for the truth â whatever the truth was these days.Â
Some days youâd catch him looking at you and there would be this look. It was in his eyes and his smile. It was different, compared to the way he looked at everyone else. Maybe it was just because heâd known you longer, or some psycho-freud thing where a patient falls in love with their nurse. Either way, for a moment, youâd let yourself believe it was what you thought it was. That he did feel the same. That he did get the same tornado of butterflies in his belly whenever he looked at you.Â
âLike I what?â Tyler pressed, his expression dropping for just a moment as he leaned in. Could you see it? Could you see the way he was looking at you?Â
For a moment, you held his gaze. His green gaze bore into yours as your eyes flicked around his face, From each of his eyes and down to the curve of his lips. And just as you let the wall in your mind slip in front of him, you remembered why you were there.Â
His hand. The blood. The water.Â
Shaking your head, you stood up from the wooden desk chair youâd pulled inside when you went back for your medical bag. Clearing your throat, you shook your head.Â
âNothing, justâŠlike that. I canât work properly whenâŠwhen you watch me.â
Tyler sat back, the smile slowly coming back onto his face. âRight, sorry.â
âItâs okay,â you mumbled quietly before flicking your eyes back to his for a moment. And he looked back. Again, for a moment, you let the wall in your mind slip.Â
But you were there to help him.Â
Looking away, Tyler looked away, too and shifted in his seat. Every now and again, youâd hear him hiss and youâd apologise loud enough for him to hear. Twenty minutes later, you were done and finally wrapping his hand.Â
But, you took your time. Not only to be safe with the cut but also because there was just something about having Tylerâs hand in yours. His touch, you didnât know when or how, had made an imprint on you. On your skin, on your head, on your heart.Â
Tylerâs fingers held onto yours for a moment as you tucked the final piece of bandage into place.Â
âThere you go,â you said, quietly.Â
âThanks.â
And you both just stayed like that for a while. No talking, just touch. You couldnât bring yourself to look at him in fear that, if you did, the wall in your head would completely fall and youâd never be able to get it back up again.Â
Tyler was your best friend. The person you told the most to. He was also your brotherâs best friend. And your team mate.Â
When you finally did speak, it seemed to come out in a whisper. You told him how to keep his palm dry for a few days. Youâd check on it every now and then but he should be okay in a week's time.Â
âWe better get back.â
You eventually nodded, wishing you didnât have to.Â
âYeah.â
âEverything okay?â Kate asked as you came and sat back next to her, Tyler hurrying to the other side of his truck to replace the piece heâd been fixing.Â
âYeah. Everythingâs fine.â
Only, by the time you all headed to bed, you couldnât sleep. The feeling of Tylerâs hand was still tingling on your skin and every time you closed your eyes, the look in Tylerâs eyes was staring right back at you.Â
So, finally pulling the covers from you, you wrapped yourself in your short dressing gown, slipped on your shoes and opened up your motel door.Â
And for a while, you stood out on the balcony. Everyone in the lot was in bed, fast asleep. A gentle breeze was passing through but the heat of the day was still hovering in the air. Nothing but fields surrounded the motel so away from the dim lights dotted around the parking lot, the only thing that provided any real light was the moon hanging in the sky, along with the dusting of stars.Â
However, just as your mind was beginning to clear of one certain green-eyed cowboy scientist, a door opened from down the hall.Â
At its entrance, Tyler stood in a plain white t-shirt and some long cotton pajama bottoms. His hair wasnât as neat as it was earlier, but it wasnât stuck out completely either.Â
Clearly, he couldnât sleep, either.Â
âHey.â your voice was quiet as he looked up at you.Â
âOh, hey. Whatâre you doing up?â
âCouldnât sleep.â You answered honestly. There was no point trying to lie to him, not that you could think of a plausible lie at that moment. Tyler always had this magical power to read you when you didnât want him to. âWhat about you?â
Tyler slowly walked until he stood beside you, leaning against the railing with you. âSame story. Wanna talk about it?â
You turned away from him. âNot particularly.â
âYou sure? Youâve got that Iâm-tryna-make-sure-Tyler-wonât-read-me look about you. Gotta be serious if youâre looking like that.â
âHow do you do that?â you asked him. âHow can you read me like that?â
Tyler just shrugged with a smile. âThatâs the thing, Sweetheart. I just can.â
âVery smooth.â
Tyler gave a breathy chuckle. âSo? Whatâre you tryna keep from me?â
âNothing.â
âBullshit.â
You shook your head, trying your best to hide your smile. âNothing. Really. Itâs not something you can help me with.â
âYou sure, sweetheart?â
You tried not to smile too much so you kept your eyes from his, keeping your gaze on your chipped nail polish. âYeah, Iâm sure.â
You didnât know when heâd first called you âsweetheartâ, just that he was the only one who ever called you that and that heâd done it for years. You were also the only one he used that nickname with so it wasnât long before you answered to it.Â
And that every time you heard him call you that, the gentle butterflies in your stomach would start swirling and fluttering their way into an EF-3.Â
You had to find a way to change the subject, to turn his attention away from you. At least for a little while, before the moon moved higher and shone directly down onto you like a large spotlight.Â
âHowâs your hand doinâ?â
Tyler flipped it over. âGood. I think. Itâs not hurtinâ too bad. Bandage might be a little loose, but-â
âShow me.â
Tylerâs hand was back in yours as you stood in front of him, checking the bandage over. It was coming loose, a little.Â
âIt should hold til the morning,â you told him after tightening it. âThen I can clean it again and change them out.â
Tyler nodded, taking advantage of the time he had with your hand back in his. âOkay.â
Carefully, his fingers closed over yours and he stepped a little closer.Â
You could feel his gaze on you and it only made your heart quicken. Your hand in his, you didnât want to let go. But you knew you had to.Â
âTylerâŠâ
âY/n, look at me.â You couldnât bring yourself to do as much. You knew if you did, you wouldnât want to look away. âSweetheart, please look at me.â
With a breath, you forced your head up to look at him. Even in the moonlight, even with the long day and tiredness behind his eyes, even in his pajamas on a rickety old balconyâŠ
Tyler was still as handsome as ever.Â
And you were so deeply, madly, stupidly in love with him.Â
Tylerâs other hand itched to touch you, to reach up and brush the wild strands away from your face, to cup your jaw. And it did.Â
âI donât want you to do something youâll regret.â
Tyler held your gaze to his and he lightly shook his head. âSweetheart, the only thing I could regret in this moment would be to walk away right now. Not without asking you this.â
You were both quiet for a moment, waiting for Tylerâs heartbeat to calm down in his chest for a moment to let him speak freely.
âIf I kissed you right nowâŠwould you run away?â
If it was anyone else, if it was any other day, you would have taken longer to answer. You would have taken time to answer before, probably, saying âyesâ â no matter how much you wanted to say ânoâ.Â
But the wall had broken.Â
Not even broken. It had been shattered into a million pieces. And you didnât have time to rebuild it. Not that, after his question, you would even want to.Â
So, before you can stop to think. Before you can stop your heart from answering before your head, you spoke.Â
âNo.â
You wouldnât run away.Â
You wouldnât want to run away.Â
You felt your breath hitch in your chest as he moved closer, his thumb caressing your skin. Whatever silence had been passing in your ears was suddenly gone, replaced with your heartbeat.Â
If he didnât kiss you soon, you might die.Â
But if he did, youâd probably still die.Â
Finally, he did as much.Â
It was soft. New. And yet somehowâŠright.Â
You leaned in closer, kissing him back. With a contented sigh, your lips parted ever so slightly and he took the opening. Tasting your lips for the first time was a feeling that would forever be imprinted in his memory. Mint from your toothpaste but somethingâŠsweet.Â
Your back bumped against one of the metal rods set every few paces above the metal railing of the balcony. Tylerâs hand pushed through to the back of your head, his entire being practically swallowing you whole in the darkness.Â
Reaching up, you pulled him closer by his neck, a soft groan rippling from his chest. You tried your best to ignore the ache it gave you in between your legs.Â
Before you knew it, your back was no longer against the metal rods outside your room, but rather up against the back of your motel door as it closed behind both you and Tyler.Â
His hands were everywhere, and you still couldnât get enough of his touch. Carefully, his hands slid down your body, tugging you in by your hips before his palms came under your ass and lifted you against the door. Your legs wrapped around him as if youâd done it a thousand times before.Â
And, technically, you had.Â
Just never in this position. Or in this situation.Â
Your heart beat out of your chest and Tyler could feel it. Under his tongue, he found your pulse. It was going almost as fast as his. A small moan left your throat as he sucked and nibbled at your pulse point, all before softening it with his tongue.Â
Pushing his face back to yours, you pushed a searing kiss against his mouth as your hands tracked through his hair. He was careful when carrying you over to your bed, slowly laying you down as he climbed over you.Â
His hands pushed down your thighs until he was met with your dressing robe. And for a moment, he leaned up and broke the kiss.Â
He made light work of untying your robe and by the time it fell open, despite the face you still had your pajamas on, he was looking at you like heâd just found pure gold. Slowly, his fingers traced up your body as he pushed the robe from your shoulders.Â
Your legs spread wider for him as he knelt up to take you in.Â
âIf you wanna stop at any point-â
âI wonât.â
Tyler looked directly in your eyes. âSweetheart, itâs important to me that I have your consent. If, at any point, you wanna stop. We will. You have my word on that.â
You sat up on your elbows, your gaze not breaking from his. âI trust you, Tyler. And consent goes both ways.â
A small smirk came to his face. âSweetheart, you have no idea how long Iâve been dreaming about this. I have no plan on stopping if you donât want me to.â
âGood. Because I donât either.â
Reaching up, you pulled him in to kiss you again, and he got to work. Removing your robe, you came to kneel on the bed along with him. Eventually he threw the robe across the room, just before you pushed him down and straddled his lap.Â
As you did so, he helped you remove his shirt and he couldnât help but take a mental image of you as you took one of your own.Â
Youâd known Tyler was muscular. He was a bull rider once, but that mostly sent your eyes looking at his ass and thighs when you werenât looking for cuts and bruises. But the chest and arm muscles on this manâŠmaybe youâd been looking at the wrong part of him all these years.Â
But, he did have a nice ass.Â
âYou okay there, darlinâ?â Tyler drawled.Â
âHow the fuck-â
Tyler chuckled, his fingers deftly tracing up and down your spine. âItâs a lot of lifting and protein, mostly.â
You didnât know what else to say as you looked back at him. Leaning in, you kissed him again.Â
As one of his hands pushed through your hair, your own trailed down his body before you started working at the drawstring of his pants.Â
You squealed a little as he flipped you onto your back, and a small laugh left both of you before he started to rid himself of the bottom half of his clothing. Then he pulled yours down. They, too, got tossed somewhere else across the room.Â
As he leaned over you, you hooked one of your legs around him and pulled him closer. You could feel his smile in his kiss. And as you shifted a little under him, you felt the hardness of him push against you.Â
With your hand, you palmed his cock before letting your fingers run down its shaft. Tylerâs kiss became stronger as you carefully wrapped your hand around him, pumping up and down.Â
His body jerked as a groan left him. And when he saw that wicked glint in your eye as you lay under him, your pussy only growing wetter for him, a deep groan fell from his lips.Â
âFuck, baby.â Tyler growled below your ear and into your neck.Â
Leaning closer, he started to nibble at your neck, no doubt leaving his mark on your. Finally, his fingers slipped down your front and pushed your legs further apart.Â
His fingers ran down your folds before bringing your wetness to circle around your clit. With a little pressure, he continued to circle his fingers around as your hips bucked, his cock getting its first touch of your pussy.Â
You pushed yourself up until you were straddling him once more. And with his help, you slowly lowered yourself down onto him. A small whimper left your lips as you eased yourself down his shaft.Â
âThatâs it, sweetheart.âÂ
You pulled up a little, hearing a strangled groan from Tyler as his fingers bit into your flesh.Â
Once more, you eased yourself onto him. With your eyes locked on his, he pecked a kiss to your lips.Â
âTake what you need, sweetheart. Take what you need.â
You started off slow at first, circling your hips. Eventually, you picked up the pace as Tylerâs head dropped to your chest. He could feel you pulsating against him, getting ready for more. And if it wasnât more than he ever dreamed ofâŠ
âFuck, Sweetheart. Youâre too good at this.â
Continuing to circle in his lap, his hips bucking against yours begging for more, your hand fisted his hair and pulled his head back. Leaving his neck exposed, you leaned forward and left your own mark for him to discover in the morning before finally kissing his lips.Â
Softly biting his bottom lip, your fingers relaxed and slid down the back of his neck before softening the sting with your tongue. You felt Tylerâs finger bit deliciously into your skin as he reached for your thighs and pulled up closer to him.Â
âBaby, fuck.â
Leaning in closer, you let your tongue slip into his mouth as you kissed him. With the kiss becoming wet and hot all at once, you slowly lifted yourself from him.Â
âBaby, I need you to keep- oh. Fuck. That-thatâs it, Sweetheart.â Tyler watched as you slowly rode him, his cock pumping in and out of your glistening cunt. âFuck. Youâre taking me so well.â
You moaned, feeling his fingers trace your body as you circled your hips once more, his cock buried deep inside of you.Â
âSweetheart, can I touch you?â
âYes.â You hissed the word, your head falling back for a moment as your cheeks flushed and your body begged for more.Â
Slowly, his fingers slid between the tops of your folds before finding your clit. A loud moan escaped your throat and by the time you looked back at Tyler you found a tender yet smug smile on his face. âYou like that, baby?â
âY-yes.â
âDo you want me to do it again?â
He kept a small pressure on your clit, but refused to move his fingers until you answered him again. You swallowed thickly before nodding. And for a moment, his fingers teased you, tapping gently at you. Then he stopped.Â
âI need your words, darlinâ. Do you want me to do it again?â
âYes. Please,â you begged him.Â
Finally, his fingers moved, applying a gentle pressure before curling you. Your hips bucked. He could feel your walls beginning to clench around him as you tried your best to keep a steady rhythm.Â
âTake what you need, darlinâ.â
His fingers pushed deeper inside you.Â
âFuck, baby, youâre soaking.âÂ
You felt Tylerâs free hand push back up your thigh before rounding your ass and pulling you down on him once more and squeezing.Â
âYouâre so fucking hot like this, sweetheart.â
Finally, his lips were against yours, his tongue dipping in and out of your mouth as he kissed you, only to leave you wanting more.Â
A soft moan gargled at the back of your throat as you held onto his shoulders, deepening his kiss and letting him stuff you with his cock.Â
Pulling his hand from your folds, you let out a whimper before a groan as he switched hands. And with some of your wetness still coating his fingers, his hand traced up your sides before rubbing slowly against your pebbled nipple.Â
With guttural moans, groans and gasps, your eyes locked onto Tylerâs as he kept you riding through your high before you felt him empty himself inside of you.Â
Your gasp and moan was muffled with his searing kiss once more, his hand coming to the back of your head to keep your lips locked onto his.Â
Eventually, the room settled with heavy breaths and closed eyes. Your forehead resting against his, his cock still inside of you, he just held you there for a few minutes.Â
âDid you mean it?â
Tyler, with heavy breaths, leaned back to look at you. âDid I mean what?â
âThat youâd been dreaming about this?â
Tyler swallowed, a little nervously, but his eyes never left you. His clean fingers pushed the stay hairs from your head as he did so.Â
âEvery word.â
âHow long?â
Tyler couldnât give you a date. He just knew⊠âA long time.â
You didnât say anything. But you did lean down and kiss him. It was tender, this time. Soft and kind. Tyler was careful when flipping you over to lay down on the mattress. And he was careful still when he pulled himself out of you.Â
âStay there. Iâll help clean you up.â
It was the first time it had happened, but you stayed where you were, watching as Tyler pulled his pajama bottoms back on and walked across to the bathroom. A few minutes later, he came back with a warm cloth and with soft kisses pressed against your belly and hips, he helped clean you up.Â
âTyler?â
He looked up from where he was knelt by your feet. âHm?â
âPromise meâŠpromise me this isnât just a one time thing.â He looked at you a little confused, but you looked away. âBecauseâŠyou mean a lot to me, Ty. More than you know. And IâŠI donât think my heart can take this just being casual.â
Tylerâs eyes remained on yours, despite the fact you werenât looking at him. So, putting his hand up to your face, he made you look at him.Â
âSweetheart, I donât plan on this being a casual one-time thing. Iâm too madly in love with you to do something like that.â
âYou are?â
Tyler smiled, a little relief resting behind his eyes. Heâd waited years to finally tell you.Â
âFor a long time. I donât know when it changed, but I know it did. So, I promise. This is not a one time thing.â
âYouâre really in love with me?â
Tyler chuckled. âIâm surprised you hadnât noticed by now. Pretty sure Kateâs got a wager with Boone on how long it would take for you to notice.â
âSo earlierâŠwhen you were looking at meâŠâ
Tyler nodded, the soft smile never leaving his face. âYeah. Because I do. I do love you, Y/n.â
Your eyes tracked over his face. Nothing but truth.Â
Tyler could physically see the weight fly off your shoulders. âIâm in love with you, too, Tyler.â
One look at your face, and Tyler knew he didnât have to question it. So, leaning up, he pressed a kiss to your lips as you fell backwards and pulled him with you.Â
Valarr Targaryen x reader
Synopsys: In which the crown prince, Shield of the realm, falls in love with its Sword. A strong prince and a wife who is strength itself.
Word count: 2477
A/N: This is a crack idea that came to me at 2 am! So, not double checked, etc., the reader is black fem-coded.
Warnings: Blood, Fighting, PTSD. (happy ending!!)
The realm seen before new and unsullied eyes could be one of wonder and spectacle, with stories of knights and dragons. Wolves taller than stones and stones greater than a castle or sept, it could truly be the world of wonders and dreams, as if gods and magic had made this land of golden fibres, seas of lapis, and emerald trees. And alone in the Giant's palm, where the emeralds parted, and the sun spun of gold beamed down into the clearing below, peace could be found.
Blades of grass laughed as the wind blew fast and crisp, the dirt and rock piling higher still- in clumps and mounds, and the love of two echoed and filled the clearing with complexity. Â
âThis is how it should beâŠâÂ
One voice insisted as the wind carried on the others, âWe could make it this way.âÂ
âWe will.â
And as if the realm were alive with life, a quiet gurgle came from the wind, the dirt hardened and smoothed, the grass curled and coiled, and with the kiss of the sun turned gold. The small held breath of the forest took its first ever one, tiny hands and louder laughs filled the Giant's palm, and for once, the realm was gifted again. Â
The Day Valarr comes to you, he is not himself.
The sky smells of flame and the ground of blood and tears as the hands of dying men extend to the sky in hopes of something greater, or perhaps the mercy of something worse to come. You stand amongst them, in damaged armour and a helm half gone. A sword in hand, as your other flexed in readiness for another round, as the boy ahead steadied himself. His horse is fleeing, and your brown mare is looming elsewhere on the ash-burnt field. Â
âA small skirmish barely worth the time,â his grandfather told him. âGood experienceâ, his brother said without much care.
Now standing amongst dying men and a man not keen on dying, Valarr gripped his shield tighter despite the pain in his side. A true pain that made the blood rush to his ears and his heart beat with a steady fear. That tunnelled his vision into a fury of disfoucs that none thought the diplomatic prince possessed.
The helm of his opponent may have been in pieces, but the blood on his? Face was nothing compared to the wound he? had inflicted upon him. Upon him by his own sword. Â
No one could say who reengaged first, as both forms charged ahead at each other and clashed in the middle. Sword and Shield in a lock and determined fury. With each swing of Valyrian steel you brought down, it was met with equal shield. Unrelenting and growing as each stroke brought the boy back, knees buckling and arms tiring with each downward strike. His guard was breaking, but the shield met each blow. Â
Screams of fury and wild eyes.
Coiled hair and a bloodied face as the final pieces of your helm fell away, splattered and moved with you. A visage of strength.
And with each glimpse of you from behind his shield, your face burned. Burned into the Princeâs memory. How you screamed with each strike, teeth bared, and eyes focused. How the sword, too heavy for a normal woman, seemed like a small needle in your hands. Â
Valarr wouldnât forget it. He wouldnât forget you.
In the shaking nights, he arose from slumber with your face in his dreams, the shriek of his horse when it startled, nor the healing puncture in his side. He was reminded of you constantly.
What would he say when the Maesters hurried over his weary form? What would he tell his father of Great Brickepear as he cried over his son's medicine bed?
Each time another battle came, or another small clash came about, the prince would ask, ask of a knight in smaller armour, or if a woman with coiled hair was seen nearby after each conflict. Ignoring the eyes of his family and the curious eyes of council men. Â
The moons that followed his recovery, Valarr did not dare don his armour nor wield his sword again. The blood still dried upon it, and the brand of your hands still fresh on the hilt as he stared at it. Ghosting his fingers were it pierced his flesh, then the handle, which he should have held tighter. Â
âWas it really a woman?â Breakspear whispered from his place on the couch of his sonâs chambers. Deceptively relaxed with a leaned back posture. Though the growing grey hairs, tear-stained eyes, and roating of one of his rings betrayed his otherwise outwardly calm demeanour. Â
âIâm certain of it.â
The prince replayed the dark day every night in his sleep and could still see your face clear as day. How the dark sky parted for just a moment behind your head to illuminate you as if the halo of life grew behind you. And how it guided your will down with each crushing blow. He could not forget you.
âI see her every night,â voice still weary and weak from night terrors as Valarr stared harder at his sword. âI feel her even nowâŠâ
Even with the wound healed and closed.
Baelor looked at his son. At his first babe, who now seemed smaller than that. And how he, with the power of the realm and men, could do nothing to aid his boy, his baby.
Moons had passed and the seasons changed with them, but the haunting did not stop. Even as Valarr physically healed, Baelor watched him stagnate. Quieter and more weary with sleep, as dark circles gained more hoops.
How many more nights will he find his eldest curled in the bed with his youngest when the night became to dark? Darkness brought him here to keep the boy company again as they stayed up late to avoid the terror of the dream. Â
âThere is a story of a man who gave his life to find peace in vengeance,â Baelor began as he rose from the couch and walked over to his son.
Side by side, he looked to the small boy whose eyes bore into the cold steel, âOnly to realise his death had already begun and happened the moment he chose it.â
With firm hands, Baelor brought his son to face him, jewelled fingers wiping away any stray tears that fell from brown and lavender eyes. Holding his soft face with an uncertain hold that, if too tight, could hurt or cause his babe to disappear entirely from his world.
Those tear-filled eyes did not meet their giverâs own as Valarr stared at the floor instead.
With a deep breath, the elder heir searched for what to say, what to reveal, and what to shudder away.
âThe hauntings never stop, never go away, nor fully yield. But with time, they become less and less powerful till they only bother when your mind remembers them, if ever at all.â
Looking to the sword, Baelor gave a weary frown before turning his gaze back to the smaller heir.
Valarrâs eyes focused on him this time, âI donât think Iâll ever forget herâŠâ
The night continued slowly and quietly from there on and further on afterwards until Valarr stopped needing anyone else altogether. Baelor need not keep him company when sleep ran from him, nor Matarys to help soothe him to sleep when awoken in shakes and sweats.
Maybe it had been an additional year and six moons, when spring was in full bloom with the rainy showers to help the world grow. A knight, hopefully, soon. His named on the lists as a tourney was thrown in addition to the spring festival. He was stronger now and in far better spirits as the time passed. Ever busy, but the spring festival was a welcome work distraction as he fixed his armour quietly. Â
A deep inhale, then a slow exhale. Again, again, and again till his nerves calmed to a more comfortable pace.
Heâd be jousting in the final round after hours of work and effort; itâd be over. Having beaten his cousin Aerion earlier in the day, there was only one other person who seemed to be of interest. An unnamed boy who rode in modest armour and gave no other element to the crowd. Even if Valarr spent his time resting and not competing, the mysterious newcomer was an intrigued favourite as the horn bellowed at the start of a round. Valarr could hear the way the crowd cheered for him, but settled upon his horse, the prince felt nothing but a cold dread. Â
Staring at the brown mare, Valarr lost his voice at the sight of the creature. The black hooves and tightly braided mane and tail, the scar on the horseâs mouth and the little cluster on its leg. Heâd seen it, that same horse, once before.
The horn sounded, and thoughts of what could be faded as he charged forward.
Forward and forward again until the crowd held with uncertainty as each round passed and passed again. As if the world held its breath as each rider remained mounted despite dented armour and certainly bruised bodies.
Four times it had been, and despite the pain, you felt your breath remain calm and focused, still ahead on what was to come. Twirling the long lance as the new round was being prepared, the crowd was quiet, and spectators were on the edge of their seats. Even the highborn lords and ladies watched intently, the royal family following suit.
The horns sounded, and the crowd leaned forward further till a gasp erupted from them and then cheers. Alive with life and chatter, with a few sighs of relief from the royal box.
Picking yourself up from the ground with a grunt, you looked towards the crowd as strings of flowers were thrown, a few still in your direction, but the wave thrown towards the winner. Valarr didnât look to the flowers and loud cheers; he looked to you and then stood with you. Â
Taking your hand with a firm shake as you stood amongst the growing pile of cheers and flowers.
When the crowds left, and the armour came from his skin, Valarr searched quickly amongst the stalls. Taking in the stock of your brown mare and in quick search of the mysterious challenger. With all the candles quiet and the tourney cleared, the prince had nearly given up hope, his legs tiring as they carried him further and further still.
Until the small flicker of light farther from the other tents caught his attention. Pulling him closer and closer still till he stood just outside. A nervous sweat on his brow and a lump in his throat as he heard the clanking of armour inside. Â
Peering through the slit in the fabric till you came into view. Tiny slivers of your coiled hair and plain shirt as you worked to pack your gear. Â
Valarr stood there. Stood for however long before a shriek came from him at the feeling of a cold nose on his skin. Stumbling back into a brown mare and then to the ground as the tent flap was thrown open.
And there you stood with sword in hand and eyes flickering wild over the landscape before landing on the stumbling prince before you.
And while he struggled with apologies and to stop slipping under his own feet, you stood and just stared as he resigned himself to the ground. âSorry, I was, I didnât mean to shout,â he stuttered out as an embarrassed flush ran up to his face.
Rambling on until your hand extended to him with a soft smile. Â
âYou fought well, too,â you congratulated as you helped him to his feet, slightly taller than him now, standing so close. âYouâll make a good knight one dayâ, taking a step back towards your tent.Â
You cut and filled in the awkwardness that Valarr would have surely continued if not otherwise done, âthank you, it means a lot considering how tough the competition wasâ.
A beat passed before he clapped his hands together, then rubbed the dirt from his hands. âYou fell on purpose. I wanted to say you did not need to,â his voice steadier and voice cleared with a cough. âThen you know there is at least one person truly able to best you,â your voice light despite the edge that perhaps couldâve been there. Â
Valarr knew it, could sense it in the unsaid. If it were in full truth, he had always known, since the day you bested him those years ago. There was always you. And in the frame of friendly competition and a gentle private congratulations, you seemed nearly human. Not the figure from his nightmares that seemed to swallow him, the occasional sorrow. Not the wound that throbbed and ached from its early days. Â
You seemed just an air closer to something less horrifying than you could and have been before.
âHow is your belly?â your voice plain as you motioned to him with your free hand, your mare sniffing at his hair in turn. Â
âBetter than how it used to be, itches when the rain comes ive noticedâ, the prince said with a boyish grin as he tossed his hands with a used-to shrug. âHow's your head?â he asked, in kind noticing there to be no fully apparent marker of injury. With a relaxed shrug, you gave a grin as well, âbetter than how it used to be, felt the world would never stop spinning.âÂ
And for once, the memory was light. The two of you chuckling about it now as if it hadnât reigned a terror over hearts. Like a silly squabble that seemed only so small now when truly face-to-face. Â
The laughter subsided, and light air remained between you two for the seconds that passed, him looking to you and you back to him. And with a breath, you looked back to your tent and then to the prince again, âWould you like tea?â a simple invitation that had his eyes widen just a hair. Â
Standing up straighter despite his hair now licked and styled out of place by the horse's tongue as your mare licked at him, Valarr agreed, âI would like that, miss?â
âMiss ___â you replied hodling the flap open as you entered back into your tent. Valarr repeated your name as he followed you inside and found it sounded perfect. âI am Valarrâ, he would introduce himself as he stood amongst your temporary home. And as you moved to gather and prepare the tea, you too tested his name, âValarrâ, you said, ââŠnice to meet youâ, and to him it sounded as if it were meant to be said.
Not by crowds or advisors.
But by you. Â

The Keeper of My Heart âźâËOliver Wood ౚà§
summary : You secretly joined summer Quidditch leagues under a fake name because you didnât want the attention at school. Oliver, obsessed with strategy, rants constantly about this mystery playerânot realizing itâs you. Main masterlist || Navigation
mostly fluff , angst if u squint , js enjoy , fun drabble
You had always told people you didnât play Quidditch. It wasnât exactly a lieâyou werenât on the school team, you didnât hang around the pitch, and you made sure to roll your eyes every time a match was brought up in the Gryffindor common room. It kept everyone from asking questions. But it was also a lie in the sense that youâd been playing Quidditch for years, just not at Hogwarts. Every summer, you joined a local league under a fake name, slipping into games where nobody knew you as âthat quiet Gryffindor who never goes near a broom.â It wasnât about fame or glory, not for you. It was about flyingâfeeling the wind whip past your face, the freedom of the sky. At school, though, you couldnât stand the pressure of being watched, analyzed, or pinned as the one thing people remembered about you. So you hid it.
It would have been fine, too, if Oliver Wood didnât exist.
Oliver, Gryffindorâs obsessed Quidditch captain, lived and breathed the game. He practiced plays at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He read Quidditch books for fun. He scolded his team if their form wasnât perfect. And for the past two months, he had been ranting about this mysterious player from the summer league, a flyer with incredible skill and a knack for clever feints.
You hadnât expected him to join the same league, but of course he had. Where else would he be in summer but on a broom? He was a Keeper for another team, and the first time you outmaneuvered him, you saw the spark ignite in his eyes. He made it his mission to figure you out.
Now, after a late practice, the pitch was empty save for the two of you. Youâd stayed behind, hovering above the grass, when Oliver landed hard in front of you, his broom kicking up dust.
âYouâre not getting away this time,â he said, voice rough from hours of shouting instructions.
You tilted your head, veil shimmering faintly over your features. âGetting away?â
He stepped closer, his eyes burning into yours even though he couldnât truly see you. âIâve been watching you. Youâre not just goodâyouâre⊠different. The way you fly, the way you think, the way you laugh when you nearly kill yourself with a diveâMerlin, itâs driving me mad.â
Heat crept up your neck. You opened your mouth, but he was already closing the space between you, until your broom was brushing his chest. His hand liftedâhesitant at firstâhovering just near your face, like he could pull the veil away if youâd let him.
âShow me,â he whispered. âJust once. Please.â
Your throat went dry. It wasnât the first time youâd found yourselves like thisâtoo close after a midair save, or pressed against the boards when you both dove for the Quaffle. You told yourself it was nothing, just the heat of the game. But now, in the quiet, with his breath fanning your skin and his gaze softer than youâd ever seen, it felt like everything.
âI canât,â you murmured.
His brow furrowed, but he didnât pull away. Instead, he leaned closer, his voice low, like a secret meant only for you. âWhy not? What are you afraid of? I swear Iâd never tell anyone. I just⊠I need to know.â
You shook your head, forcing a laugh to cover the way your chest ached. âIf you knew, it wouldnât be the same.â
Oliverâs eyes searched yours, trying to pierce through the spell. For a heartbeat, you thought he might actually kiss you, veil or not. But then he let out a shaky breath and dropped his hand, though his smile didnât fade.
âFine,â he said softly. âKeep your secrets. But you should knowâI donât just admire the player. I admire you.â
And when he walked away, broom slung over his shoulder, you were left tremblingânot from the flight, but from the truth you refused to let him see..
âYou donât understand,â he had said to you once, dropping his fork mid-dinner. âTheyâre brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. If I could recruit them to Gryffindor, weâd win the Cup for the next three years straight. Their grip, their speedâitâs like theyâre born to fly!â
Youâd smiled, nodding along, trying not to choke on your pumpkin juice. If only he knew.
It wasnât just irritatingâit was dangerous. Every time Oliver went on about this âmystery player,â you half-wondered if heâd somehow connected the dots. But then heâd look at you, sitting with a book in hand, and shake his head as though the thought was impossible. You didnât play Quidditch. Youâd said so yourself.
One night, though, you couldnât resist. The castle was quiet, the stars out, and the pitch was calling your name. You crept out after curfew, broom in hand, and mounted it the moment your feet hit the grass. The air rushed past you as you shot into the sky. You looped, dived, spun in figure-eights until your chest hurt from laughing. Nobody was watching, nobody was judgingâit was just you and the stars.
Or so you thought.
From below, Oliver Wood had been pacing. Heâd been in the locker room scribbling new play formations, trying to figure out how to counter the exact kind of moves heâd seen that mystery player pull in the summer. His brain was fried, and he needed fresh air. What he didnât expect was to hear the whoosh of a broom cutting through the night. Irritated, he stormed toward the pitch, ready to scold whoever thought a midnight joyride was a good idea.
Then he looked up.
He froze.
There you were, silhouetted against the moon, your form perfectâknees bent, grip tight but natural, every movement flowing with effortless confidence. Oliverâs mouth fell open. He knew that dive. He knew that feint. Heâd watched it a dozen times during the summer, sketched it onto parchment, obsessed over how to defend against it. And here you were, executing it flawlessly.
Oliverâs voice cracked through the night air, raw and incredulous.
âItâs you.â
Your broom wobbled midair. His gazeâwide, disbelieving, burningâpinned you where you hovered under the moonlight. Slowly, you drifted to the ground, feet touching the grass like youâd been caught stealing fire.
Oliver stalked closer, broom forgotten in his hand. âMerlin, I shouldâve seen it. The dives, the feintsâthe exact bloody spins from camp. I thought I was going mad. And all this timeâŠâ His voice broke into a laugh, shaky and awestruck. âIt was you.â
Your stomach twisted. All those nights at summer camp, the veil hex softening your features, your voice altered just enoughâhe had stood this close before, asking you to reveal yourself. And youâd said no, every single time. Youâd told yourself if he knew, heâd only admire the player, not the person. But now there was no veil, no disguise. Just you, with the truth hanging between you like a Quaffle waiting to be caught.
âI didnât mean for you to find out,â you said, voice small.
Oliver stared, his chest rising and falling fast, like heâd just played a full match. âFind out? You think I could ever forget the way you fly? Iââ His words tangled. He shook his head, ran a hand through his hair. âIâve been haunted by you. All summer. Every bloody play I wrote down, I compared to you. I thought I was just chasing skill, strategy, brillianceââ His eyes found yours, softening into something deeper. âBut it wasnât just that. It was you. The way you laughed when you pulled a move that shouldâve killed you. The way you made Quidditch feel⊠alive.â
You blinked at him, stunned. The Oliver you knew at Hogwarts was blunt, driven, focused on nothing but the Cup. But this Oliverâthe one looking at you like youâd hung the starsâwas softer, cracked open by the weight of finally knowing.
âYouâre not angry?â you asked.
âAngry?â He gave a disbelieving laugh, stepping closer until your broom tips touched. âI should be. You lied. You let me make a fool of myself all summer. Butââ His grin broke through, lopsided and dazzling. âI donât care. I donât bloody care, because itâs you. And youâre even better than I imagined.â
Your breath caught. His words wrapped around you like warmth, undoing months of fear. And then, because the night was quiet and his eyes were impossibly bright, you whispered, âYou meant it, didnât you? At camp. When you said you admired me.â
Oliverâs smile faltered into something gentler. His hand rose, hesitant, like it had that night at camp when the veil hex still shimmered between you. Only this time, nothing stopped him. His fingers brushed your cheek, warm and steady.
âI meant every word,â he said.
The world seemed to still. You could hear your heartbeat louder than the crickets in the grass. He was closeâcloser than everâand this time there was no spell to shield you. His thumb traced your jaw, and the awe in his gaze made you feel weightless in a way no broom ever could.
You leaned in before you could stop yourself, and Oliverâs breath hitched like he hadnât dared to hope. His lips met yoursâsoft, careful, but full of the fire heâd always carried for Quidditch, now turned entirely on you. It was a kiss months in the making, stitched together from late-night near-misses, half-finished confessions, and the impossible thrill of flying side by side.
When you finally pulled back, laughing breathlessly, Oliver pressed his forehead to yours. âYou know,â he murmured, âI donât think Iâll ever forgive you for making me lose sleep over a player who was under my nose the whole time.â
âI didnât want people staring,â you admitted softly. âI just wanted to keep it for myself. Flyingâs⊠mine. Itâs the only time I feel completely free. I didnât want to lose that.â
Oliver stepped closer, his gaze gentle now. âI get that. Truly, I do. But maybeââ his voice lowered, almost shyââmaybe you donât have to do it alone anymore.â
You couldnât stop the smile tugging at your lips. âAre you asking to fly with me, Wood?â
âIâm begging,â he said, grinning.
So you did. The two of you spent the rest of the night racing across the pitch, laughter echoing in the dark, the air alive with the rush of wind and something new sparking between you. Oliver wasnât competing or analyzingâhe was just flying, beside you, matching your dives and spins, his grin wide and unguarded.
When you finally landed, exhausted and exhilarated, Oliver leaned on his broom and looked at you like youâd hung the stars yourself.
âYouâre incredible,â he said simply.
You shook your head, smiling. âYouâre ridiculous.â
He took a step closer, and before you could overthink it, his hand brushed yours, warm and steady. âPromise me something?â he asked.
âWhat?â
âDonât hide this from me again. Not the flying, not⊠you. I donât care if you join the team or keep it secret, justâlet me see you. Like this.â
Your chest tightened, but in the best way. âI promise,â you whispered.
And when Oliverâs smile broke into something brighter than the moonlight, you realized maybe it wasnât so bad letting someone else into your sky after all.

Operation: Kiss the Prefect
Azul Ashengrotto x Reader (Valentineâs Day Special <3)
Reader is gender neutral, referred to as Prefect, Y/N, or Shrimpy(by Floyd)
Tags: Fluff, romance, based off the boat scene in The Little Mermaid, funny
Warnings: Mentions of things in book 3; slight spoilers, spelling mistakes are very likely!
Blurb: Samuel(My Twisted ver. Of Sebastian) and Finn(My Twisted ver. Of Flounder) make up a plan, also including Sully(My Twisted ver. Of Scuttle), to get you and Azul together finally. Things happen and the Tweels find out. Based off the infamous boat scene and song âKiss the Girl,â in The Little Mermaid :)
Azul is calculated, strong witted in every situation that he could possibly think of, a good trait to have, especially from where he originates. He was prepared with rebuttals and convincing phrases that got any poor unfortunate souls to bend to his whim and agree to his words, which, were always often fabricated, of course for the betterment of his business, donât you know? Although, he overworks himself, and he rarely pays attention to other things in his life, just business, business, business, and more business, always focusing on it.
And honestly, this just ticked off two of the first year dorm members of Octavinelle. It really did! They watched their Housewarden sketch away at his contracts and focusing solely on money, and they know if they donât give him a little push then heâll only know his work for the rest of his life. A little push for what exactly? Well, itâs just so painfully obvious how much Azul likes you, the Prefect. Itâs so easy to tell, yet heâs using his work as a distraction to hide his true feelings it seems.
They watch how he stumbles over his words when you talk to him willingly at any given time, fidgeting with the cuffs of his sleeves as he nods along to your words. Of course he tries to plays this off, being all smug about certain topics if heâs well off in them, but the two students could see his inner turmoil, his reluctance to get closer.
Valentineâs Day was right around the corner, so this is the perfect time for Samuel and Finn to put their plan into action. They knew that you, too, also had the hots for Azul (Info heard from Grim who complained loudly after finding out). Sure he tried to rob you of your home, but that was in the past. He mentions you at least once everyday around the dorm, itâs different, especially with how he acts! Theyâll use this to their advantage, after all, they did learn from the best.
Now, time to initiate mission: âKiss the Prefect!â Well, try to, anyways.
Finn sits in Sameuls dorm room on his bed, watching as he writes down key points and factors on a whiteboard, the marker squeaking with each stroke. Samuel pauses and takes a step back, reading over the board before he shakes his head and erases his thoughts away once again
âGive me an ideaâŠsomething not too cheesy, also something we can trick Azul into.â He sighs as he taps his foot.
Finn scoffs and he lays back on the bed, looking up at the ceiling. âYeaâŠtricking him? He can see right through anythingâŠalso, I donât know about this plan anymore.â He sits up and he leans back on his hands.
âWhat if it turns around on us and bites us in the ass like a piranha?â He sighs.
Samuel quirks an eyebrow and he sets his marker down and crosses his arms. âLook, thisâd be the perfect thing for us to do. Donât doubt it. Itâs for Azulâs own good, more so ours, but thatâs besides the point.â
âYou know heâll go against it if he finds outââ
âHe wonât! Finn, weâll make this plan impossible for him to decipherâŠthe motto of our dorm is to help those who seem in distressâŠor something like that, whateverâ we just need to think a little longer about it is all.â Samuel grabs his marker again and puts down a bullet point. âGive me a few ideas hereâŠâ
Finn purses his lips and he looks around the room as he takes the whole thing into consideration. âOkâŠhow about a boat ride? We tell Azul about the freshman marine biology course Crewel has us going through currently, and that if he helped out the Prefect itâd be a good way to get them indebted to himâŠis what I would say if Azul would actually consider the idea. Thereâs no way to get him to get close to the prefect on his ownââ
âOk, noâŠno, no, no, hold that thought! Finn you are something elseâŠâ Samuel hums as he hurriedly writes it down.
âOhâŠthatâs notâ I wasnât being serious about that.â He gets up from the bed and he walks over, watching the words flow down onto the board.
âNo, serious or not, this idea will be good. We just have to figure out how to make it play out right, how to get the prefect on board, too. Azul will take more convincing.â Samuel smiles as he connects lines to other points, drawing arrows.
âExactly. Getting him to go with the Prefect on his own. That wonât happen, you see how he acts around them, heâs so helpless!â Finn shakes his head, rolling his eyes at the mere thought.
âWeâll make our âcauseâ sound convincing. And, the Prefect would be more open up to the idea if we told them. âExcuse me prefect, Azul offered to take you on a boat ride for the marine biology unit, without having to pay!â Right? Sounds good? I think soâŠa little white lie doesnât hurt.â Samuel draws a boat on the whiteboard.
âThe Prefect isnât stupid, SamuelâŠâ
âWell we can try at least. Cmonnnn, think of some things!â Samuel pouts as his marker stops.
âSlow downâŠwe still have time. A whole week, soâŠweâll have plenty of time to get the finer detailsâŠjust remember we have to avoid the twinsâŠâ
Samuel stops writing and he tense up, he sighs and he caps the marker. âWeâŠwe can worry about them later. They barley recognize us as apart of the dorm, so I bet they wonât even find out, I guarantee it.â
âTheyâre creepyâŠand they find out a lot of things, donât even try meâŠâ Finn shakes his head.
âDonât be so scared.â Samuel nudges Finns shoulder with his own and smiles again. âWhatâs the worst that could happen?â
âWe die.â
âOoook, chill out, that wonât happen.â Samuel sighs, his shoulders slumping as he looks at the other boy in front of him.
âYou donât know that!â Finn huffs.
âOkâŠwell, time and fate will tell. Who do you wanna deal with? The Prefect or Azul?â Samuel quickly changes the topic.
âPrefect.â Finn nods.
âOk. Good to know. Then we can base our plan off of that. Get to thinking tonight! Remember, if we get them together then technically we have an advantage over Azul. We helped him score a hot date, so heâll just have to pay us back.â Samuel smiles, chuckles and walks Finn to the door.
Hey, theyâre Octavinelle students, after all.

Some more planning happened over the last few days and itâs finally time to initiate the ultimate plan, first convincing both sides, second, getting both sides to agree, then third, Samuel and Finn being the best wingmen imaginable and receiving the praise and glory, thatâs at least what theyâre hoping for.
The lounge isâŠtechnically closed at the moment, seats are flipped up on tables and the place has been cleansed to a spotless perfection, but more serious matters needed to be tended to.
âOk, letâs act the scene out. Pretend Iâm the prefect, you convinced me to come join you at the lounge for the project, bring up the topic about the unit, and we have to pray the Prefect will complain about it, but I will for the sake of practice. Your lines, âyea, I wish I could help you but Iâm really busy the rest of the week so I canât. Maybe ask someone else?â Right? You got it?â Samuel sighs as he eyes Finn. Finn nods and he clears his throat.
He goes over to the table in the âemptyâ lounge, and he pulls out the chair for Samuel, then Finn sits down himself.
âScribble scribble, sounds of fake studying, blah blah blah. And go!â Samuel hums.
âMan, Prefect, this new marine biology unit must be hard for you, huh?â
âOh myyyy, yes! Totally! Maybe you could help me with it considering your from the coral sea?â
âUnfortunately I canât. Iâm super busy, you know? Over the weekend I have to go back home for a little so I can hang out with my totally real girlfriend, yes.â Finn nods, pursing his lips. âMaybe ask someone else? The twins maybe?â
âBro, donât even mention the twins thatâll scare the prefect, oh my seven.â Samuel sighs as he breaks character.
âOk, sorry, I was just saying random things for the skitâŠâ Finnâs shoulders slump.
Sounds of heels clicking against the ground cause the two to straighten up. They scramble to their feet but itâs already too late for them.
âHmmmm? Little guppies are in the lounge, heh!â Floyd smirks as he sees the two, his teeth glinting in the dim lights.
âUhhhhâŠâ
âMy, my, Floyd, what do we have here?â Jade chuckles lightly.
âWhy are these fuckers up, ahhhhhâŠâ Finn whispers as he inches slowly behind Samuel, which in turn causes him to stumble and glare at Finn as he tries to use him as a shield.
âHave you two failed to read the âclosedâ sign? I donât think Azul will fair well with finding out his own dorm members were sneaking in here at such late hoursâŠâ Jade sighs, shaking his head as if he is truly disappointed.
âThereâs no way to lie our way out of this, huhâŠâ Samuelâs voice is higher pitched and just a small murmur at this point.
âPrecisely. Floyd, would you escort themââ
âWE KNOW THE WAY OUT THANK YOU!!!â Finn yelps as he books it to the door, Samuel in sync and a step behind him.
Floyd sighs and he leans back against the wall.
âDid ya hear what they were doing? Either they got some weird fetishes or theyâre planning somethingâŠâ Floyd hums.
âIndeed.â Jade nods.

You sit in class listening to Crewelâs usual small lecture before he sends everyone off to do their own thing. You go with your partner, Finn, and you start to go over the prospective material.
He awkwardly clears his throat, putting a fist to his mouth and looking at you. âSoâŠyou, uh, do you wanna come by the lounge later to study just a little more before the exam next Monday? I wonât be here for the rest of the weekend soâŠif youâd wanna.â
You weigh the option in your mind before you respond with a small nod. âSure, I think Iâm free. I donât think Crowley has me doing much today, on Fridays he usually has me clean up most the gardens around the school.â You smile.
âI uhâŠI donât think thatâs something to be normal aboutâ anyways, yea, ok, good.â He gives you a small nod. âMeet me after classes are over, we can walk to Octavinelle. Oh, and make sure you drop Grim off with your friends.â
âUh, ok, thatâs a little odd but sure.â You shrug.
"Uh, Azul implemented a new rule, no pets allowed..."
"Grim isn't a pet, though?"
"Oh, uh...better safe than sorry, oh, look at that, bell rang, see ya later, Prefect!" He hums as the bell rings and he picks up his books before leaving you alone. Grim floats over and puts his hands on his hip, already complaining about trivial topics of the dayâŠ

The loungeâs music is akin to a medley of upbeat Jazz and pop as you sit at a booth with Finn, sadly oblivious to the cards Finn and Samuel were playing to pull the strings so you and Azul would end up together.
Sully, a second year Savanaclaw student, was working in the lounge along with Samuel, having been told about this plan and he insisted on helping because he knew exactly what to do, being well versed in the topic of love, so he says.
âHow are you gonna get Azul outa his office, gonna be a bit hardâŠâ the tray in Sullyâs hand wobbles as he walks along with Samuel.
âJust wait, will you?â Samuel shakes his head.
âSoâŠPrefect. The marine biology unitâŠmust be hard, huh? You know, since youâre not like from this world or anything and youâre not a mer.â Finn smiles awkwardly.
âItâs notâŠso bad.â You shrug. âItâs definitely hard but itâs not the end of the world, Iâve been drawn the short stick plenty of times so Iâll make do, though a little help wouldnât hurtâŠâ you nod thoughtfully. Close enough to what they were hoping youâd say.
âAh, thatâs too bad. Iâd offer to help you more after today but Iâm gonna be busy, I actually have to go back homeâŠIâm sure someone else here could help. Oh, and Samâd be busy, too. You have another option as wellâŠbut heâs a lil more iffyâŠâ Finn drawls on. He looks back to Azulâs office to see Sully and Samuel acting out a scene, progressing closer to you two.
âLet me guess, Azul? As much as I think weâre on good terms, I donât know if I should bother him for something like thatâŠitâd be nice, though. And I also donât exactly have enough credit built up from ordering to have a consultation with him.â You smile as you stir your drink.
Just when the moment goes quiet, the two other members of the team come by, bickering with each other and gaining the interest of the rest of the customers. You glance over at them, and out of the corner of your eye, see Azul standing behind your booth, watching them.
The two stop fighting and they walk away, leaving Azul to linger awkwardly.
âHey, Azul.â You hum, looking down and hiding your reddened cheeks.
âHello, Y/NâŠâ he murmurs out
âHey, Azul! I canât be here to help tutor them over the weekend so I was thinking maybe you could step in! Iâll work extra hours, I promise, they were telling me how hard the unit was for themââ
âI never saidââ
âI was actually gonna take the Prefect out on a boat and show them some of the marine life up close, easier to learn that way!â Finn beams, talking over you.
Azul tenses and he pushes his glasses up, looking at Finn incredulously. âIâŠIâm busy, I wouldnât have time.â
âAzul, I think it would be quite beneficial, no? The Prefect would get to learn and you could boast your exponential knowledge of your home.â Jade smiles as he shuffles over silently.
âYea! Cmon, I bet Shrimpy would love itâŠâ Floyd chimes in.
You sit staring at all of them, and you canât help but notice a questioning gaze to Finnâs eyes.

It was the weekend, and the only time you and Azul had free was towards the evening, so, here you are, sat uncomfortably on a small rowboat with Azul. He uses his magic to turn the oars and you pass under trees, the fireflies dancing around on the land in a hypnotizing pattern.
Itâs quiet. Too quiet. The tension in the air thick and sickening.
âAhemâŠthis, this here is a sea turtleâŠâ
âI can tell.â You sigh. You rest your chin in the palm of your hand, gazing at Azul who seems to be out of his comfort zone. Itâs weird in a way. He shifts awkwardly and you see him gaze at the crystal blue water with a sense of reluctance.
Both of you blissfully unaware of anything else in the moment, Finn and Samuel are in their merforms, hiding along in the manatee and turtle grass, moving behind the cattails to listen in. This wasnât going great, they knew they needed to do a little more to set the mood.
âGo time?â Finn asks.
âGo time. Now or never.â Samuel smirks and gives a thumbs up. He whips out his magic pen and he makes flowers nearby bloom, sparkling lights fill the surrounding air, and small, delicate splashes of water pop for an added sound effect.
The boat rocks slightly and with another boost of magic, the vessel is propelled forwards towards some wisteria trees along the edges of the lagoon, the purple strands of flowers reaching down and caressing the water.
Pelicans swoop by and create an opening by moving some of the long strands out of the way and allowing the boat to go on by. Samuel smiles and he slips his magic pen away, going down and grabbing some kelp to use as a baton.
âFinish the rest, Finn. Gotta make sure the wildlife around here can add in some natural music for us.â
Finn swims off with a nod and he swims around the boat, causing various rippled patterns to form on the surface.
âDoes marine life usually do this?â You sigh out due out of disbelief, hunching over and looking over the edge. âItâsâŠoddly sweet in a way, no?â You glance back at him, leaning forwards and scooting to the edge of your seat to be closer.
âThis isnât right.â He crosses his arms, looking around with distaste.
âOhâŠNever mind that, then.â You lean back. Great, now the mood was soiled again. Again, Finn just has to give a helpful push, right?
Finn sighs and he gently nudges the boat, rocking it and causing both of you to move closer, your faces merely inches apart. His glasses slip down and he looks surprised to now be so close.
You both blush and Azul quickly straightens up, coughing into his fist and gripping the edge of the boat. âMustâve been a sharkâŠâ
âMaybeâŠâ you murmur, nodding along to his words.
You look back at each other and you canât help but smile at how stupid he looks. Usually he was a well put together business man, but now? He looks so out of it, stupid with his tinted pink cheeks. You scoot closer again and you fix his hair, tucking a strand behind his ear.
He turns as still as a statue and looks at you with widened eyes. âAhâŠâ
âThanks for this whole thing, I guess. I bet itâs not something you really wanted to do, but I appreciate it nonetheless.â You retract your hand. âIâve learned a good bit, and plus, I get to see this weirdly unnatural but beautiful sight with you.â
No! So close, sooooo close! Finn rolls his eyes and he decides to let the moment play out on its own for now until intervention is needed again.
He nods and he fixes up his uniform tie, looking away. âI agreeâŠafterwards for payment, Iâd suggest just working a shift or two at the lounge. Is that acceptable for your schedule?â
âReally?â Finn shakes his head yet again.
âI guess soâŠthanks, again.â
âItâs nothing, really. This was simply a trifle, donât worry.â He sighs.
You both lock eyes again and a lightbulb seems to go off. You reach your hands over to his, holding them palm up and offering them to him. He responds and tentatively places his hands in yours.
âHeyâŠcan I maybe tell you something? I justâŠdonât want to ruin our friendship with what Iâm about to say, well, I mean if you even consider us friends, you know?â You sigh, your cheeks bright red at this point as you look down to see fish swimming by.
âWhy wouldnât I consider you that? Youâre a great asset to meâ I meanâŠmore than that I supposeâŠâ the last part of his sentence is a quiet mutter, his hands tightening around yours.
âAzul, I like you, as crazy as it is to say. I canât really hide it anymore. I donât know what it is about youâŠâ
His hands tremble and he purses his lips, looking like heâd literally blow up any second now out of embarrassment, happiness, longing, yearning, relief, who knowsâŠYou wait for a response, yet a verbal one never leaves, instead he leans forwards and he intertwines his fingers with yours.
âAre we sealing the deal then? I dunno, sounded like something youâd say.â You smile, which in turn causes him to as well.
You both lean in, your lips centimeters apart and your eyes closed, the sweet ocean breeze and the mix of his cologne filling your senses in the best way imaginable. The moment felt surreal.
Finn giggles quietly and smiles, completely giddy as he watches the romance finally bloom and take off. He gets ready to cheer, but the cute moment is short lived as he watches two long shadows swim by in the water beneath the boat. The boat rocks then tips over, sending you and Azul both into the water.
You pop back up above the water, using your arms and legs to keep you afloat as you take a few gasps of air.
âAzul?â You huff as you look around, swimming over to the more shallow edge of the lagoon.
Azul slowly peeks his head up out of the water, his skin turned to his purple-grey hue which was common in his merform. Your eyes meet his and you relax, moving over to him.
âYou ok?â
âSeems soâŠâ
You look at him and you canât help the bubbles of laughter that escape your mouth from the absurdity of the situation. He ducks down below.
âHey, âzul, I wasnât laughing at youâŠâ
You take a breath and you move your head below, opening your eyes and looking at him as he sulks. You put a hand on his shoulder and he looks over at your smiling face.
âThis was ruinedâŠâ the water muffles his voice and you gently tug him up, bobbing back up to the surface with your hand grabbing his arm.
âSay that again?â
âThe moment. It was ruined, I wasnât watching my magic while turning the oarsâŠâ
âNo. Itâs fine! I wasnât laughing at you, just at us falling in. Geez. Come here.â You wrap your arms around his shoulders and you press a kiss to his lips, a small squeak emanating from his throat as his eyes widen then relax, eventually fluttering closed. He wraps his arms back around you and you can feel his tentacles grip your legs, a subconscious action of his. You both pull away after a moment, stupid fulfilled smiles on your faces.
âDo I still have to work shifts at the lounge for this?â
âI donât suppose soâŠconsider the kiss to be paymentâŠâ
âIâm lucky I didnât have to sign a contract to kiss you. Youâve come a long way.â You pat his back.
âReally? I didnât think youâd think of me to stoop that low.â He looks at you with an unamused expression. âHappy Valentineâs Day.â
Splashing of water can be heard from behind you and you see Jade and Floydâs heads pop up. Floyd comes up behind you and pries you off of Azul, giving you a big squeeze.
âAwwwwww! Looky! Azul and Shrimpy, sitting in a coral tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G! You and Azul are so cute, but me and Jade got bored, took too long.â He giggles.
âAnd we thought itâd be nice of us to give you a gentle push in the right direction is all.â Jade nods along with his pointer finger and thumb gently grasping his chin.
âThanks?â You sigh.
âOf course, Shrimpy! Heh!â He holds you tighter and does a small spin in the water. âDonât get jealous, Azul.â He winks at him.
âYou two are insufferable.â He face palms and shakes his head.
âQuite the contrary.â Jade smirks widely.
Finn and Samuel stay off in the distance, heads hung in despair. âHowâd they find out?â
âI donât know. Now theyâre taking credit for our idea!â
âIt was probably Sully, that loud mouth.â Samuel sighs. âShouldnât have let him in on the plan.
âExactly. Your fault.â
âMine? Donât start with me Finnââ
(Finn and Samuel never got the recognition they hoped forâŠin fact Jade and Floyd got it all. How did they even hear of the plan? After catching them in the lounge the one night they did their own little investigation and discovered their planâŠSully is still blamed by SamuelâŠjustice for Sully, yâall)
AHHHHH! Iâm done! I fear I may have lost track like halfway through, but itâs okâŠI like how it ended at least. Also you could tell I was getting restless while writing this cause my sentences kept getting shorterâŠThanks for reading, my lovelies!ïżŒ
