These robots plan to replace over 70,000 plastic containers with compostable alternatives every year! And the raw materials for these items? Agricultural waste! That's using technology to tackle two problems at once 🤖 Worldwide, the equivalent of a garbage truck full of plastic is dumped into the ocean every minute, and if current trends continue, scientists say the total could reach 53m tons annually by 2030 – roughly half of the weight of all fish caught from all the oceans each year. #Repost @get.waste.ed @download.ins --- Why build an airport over an endangered turtle habitat in the first place?? 😡 The Maafaru Airport in the Maldives was completed in 2019, yet green sea turtles like this one still come back to what's left of their nesting grounds to lay eggs before returning to the ocean 🌊 The rise in global sea levels has caused major damage to turtle nesting zones, leaving these creatures with nowhere else to go! It also doesn't help that industrial fishing is completely decimating their populations. Thankfully this turtle made it back to the water safely, but a hotel and resort are still in the works for this same beach, which will disrupt even more of this delicate habitat. Dark' fishing vessels turn off their location transmitters to avoid being detected while they illegally plunder the oceans around the world, but now they won't be able to get away with it! New satellite tech to locate, track and fine criminal fishing fleets from space has been developed by the Canadian government and the Department of National Defense! It's estimated that 26 million tons of fish are caught by dark vessels every year, representing 30% of the world's total fishing activities! They've already launched the pilot program in the Bahamas and Costa Rica with plans to expand to other small island nations and coastal states where illegal vessels have a huge impact on local economies and fish stocks. Illegal fishing is a major contributor to the decline of fish stock and destruction of ecosystems in the waters. Australia knows that biodegradable plastic is NOT the answer! It might sound good, but it's often just as harmful as regular plastic! Australia is taking serious action by introducing a national plan to phase out problematic plastics, including the biodegradable ones. Many biodegradable plastics are just regular fossil-based plastic with chemicals added to make it break down faster and pollute the environment with microplastics! Some biodegradable plastics are made from plant-based materials with synthetic additives and plastic resin. However, these plant-based plastics aren't suitable for home composting as they require precise conditions to break down. And compostable plastics aren't much better! Even plastic labeled as fully compostable is only meant for industrial composts which are few and far between. Recognizing that biodegradable plastic is problematic is a HUGE step Australia's taking to tackle the plastic crisis! Now we need to rethink food packaging overall and instead opt for refillable, reusable and waste-free options.
