some lite notes on the fairy tales of remnant book! (which i’ll forever more refer to as ftor) spoilers beware. if one of these notes seem highly relevant to you or your muse i’d be happy to type it up & send it the whole story over. i think the community’s been posting these stories online too, particularly phoenix/night over on yt.
the book is introduced as a pet project if ozpin’s, a collection of fairy tales, a book intended to be placed at the core of a new curriculum at the huntsmen academies. ozpin has an afterword after each fairy tale, so there is a lot of insight into his thinking & values. he unsurprisingly places a lot of value into all stories, myths, and fairy tales. this strongly suggests that coursework on remnant fairy tales & stories are officially incorporated into all of the huntsman academies’ curriculum in some way, and i am stoked about it.
new grimm!!
several grimm noted to exist in the swamps of mistral:Â
great Lagartodiles
fierce Grendels
poisonous Long Tongues
tricky Whisps
a grimm with a dedicated fairy tale. the fable is called The Grimm Child and the grimm is called the Chill, a grimm that can possess humans with the slightest touch, hiding in their bodies or controlling, but only for a few minutes at a time. they are only found in shadows and almost always travel alone. when in a human host, the chill can’t speak or act normally. it either doesn’t speak or it may repeat the last word the human spoke over and over again.
there are two unique origin tales / creation myths for how faunus came into existence on remnant. they differ in tone. one of them had apparently never been written down before although it used to be commonly known among the faunus; now the story’s fallen out of favor because the magical island in the story sounds an awful lot like menagerie and, you know. menagerie creation issues. they both involve a god confronting humans and animals about their similarities & differences & and then boom bam faunus, but then the faunus get hated on forever more. so.
there is a story about a king and the crown of choice relic, which grants its user visions of the future.
there is the full version of The Man Who Stared at the Sun, a tale with vacuoan origins which appeared in btd.
“Faunus stories tend to be bittersweet or downright depressing”
The Thief and the Butcher is a faunus story that also has a movie adaptation
there’s a story about an institution called the Circle which preceded the foundation of the huntsman academies. it involves one of ozpin’s earlier reincarnations reluctantly gathering a following/acolytes who all want to improve the world, but the Circle is actually built between his reincarnations while oz was not present - oz did not intentionally found the institution. it was his followers who built a town & dedicated themselves to teaching others how to master aura and unlock semblances. after oz reincarnated and revealed himself again they asked him to stay on as the founder, which he did, but later the circle was destroyed not by grimm but by people. some warriors heard about oz, assumed he was a god, and wanted to take him & these other powerfully trained individuals down. the moral repeated throughout is “the folly of placing their hopes and faith in one man. not even a very good man.” (oz says this about himself & his mistakes several times over)
