After months of anxiety among South African fruit producers over steep US tariffs, China has stepped in to provide a vital lifeline for the country’s farmers. The new trade agreement between the two nations is set to open up massive opportunities for South Africa’s struggling stone fruit industry and strengthen agricultural ties between Pretoria and Beijing.

Tariffs Trigger Panic Among Farmers

Uncertainty has loomed large since US President Donald Trump’s announcement of reciprocal tariffs in April, which increased duties on South African goods to nearly 30%. While some critical exports—such as minerals—were exempt, the country’s citrus and stone fruit growers, particularly in the Western Cape, feared severe economic fallout and potential job losses.

China Steps In with a Lifeline

That situation is now changing. China has emerged as a key partner, signing a new stone fruit trade agreement in Shanghai between South Africa’s Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, and China’s Minister of Customs, Sun Meijun.

The deal grants South Africa first-time access to the Chinese market for five stone fruit varieties—apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, and prunes—under a single comprehensive agreement. This marks a historic milestone, as it’s the first instance where China has opened its borders to multiple fruit types from one country through one deal.

A Boon for South Africa’s Agricultural Sector

Minister Steenhuisen highlighted that the agreement aligns with South Africa’s broader strategy to diversify export markets and reduce dependence on traditional buyers. China’s expanding middle class and growing appetite for imported fruit make it a promising new destination for South African exports.

The potential economic impact is substantial. The Chinese market is expected to unlock R400 million in revenue over the next five years, with projections to double within a decade.

“We expect the inaugural 2025/26 export season to generate around R28 million, rising to R54 million in 2026/27,” Steenhuisen noted.

China’s Growing Fruit Demand

China’s appetite for fruit is enormous. In the past year alone, the country imported over 21 million cartons of peaches and nectarines and 20 million cartons of plums—more than South Africa’s entire annual export volume.

“This market could contribute as much as R400 million to the economy in just a few years,” said Thabile Nkunjana, Senior Agricultural Economist at the National Agricultural Marketing Council. “But considering China imported peaches and plums worth about $4.4 billion (R70 billion) last year, there’s still tremendous room for growth.”

Challenges and Competition

Despite the optimism, competition in the Chinese market will be fierce. South Africa will face established exporters from Chile, Argentina, Australia, and the United States. However, Nkunjana remains confident:

“South African fruit is known globally for its quality. In any fair market, our products can compete.”

Boosting Jobs and Investments

Beyond export growth, the agreement promises a ripple effect on employment and investment. Estimates suggest the deal could create 350 direct jobs in farms and packhouses and around 600 total jobs when including logistics and packaging.

“When demand rises, farmers expand production. This stimulates the entire value chain,” Nkunjana explained.

Infrastructure and Efficiency Improvements

The success of this trade opportunity also depends on infrastructure. Encouragingly, reports indicate improved efficiency at Cape Town’s ports, which could enhance South Africa’s competitiveness in global markets.

“If our logistics—from packing to shipping—work seamlessly, we gain an edge,” Nkunjana added.

Beyond Stone Fruit: Expanding Agricultural Ties

The new partnership extends beyond stone fruits. Discussions between the two ministers also touched on resuming beef exports from select South African regions and a Chinese inspection visit to cherry and blueberry farms.

“China has been our largest trading partner for over a decade,” Steenhuisen said. “This cooperation underscores our shared commitment to expanding opportunities in agriculture.”

A Timely Rescue for South African Farmers

For many in the agricultural community, the new deal represents relief and hope after months of uncertainty.
