Trine franchise’s future under doubt after criticism
Seeing a fine indie developer such as Frozenbite respond to criticism by fans often makes for an interesting case.
Trine and its sequel were universally adored - by critics and fans alike. Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power has received a somewhat colder reception due to three reasons - a slightly higher price point (20 Euro, £15.99), brief running time and a story that ends on a cliffhanger, without any plans for a DLC to wrap it up.
In the words of Frozenbite’s Vice President, Joel, the developer planned for the game to have a substantially larger scale than what was released. Alas, the budget constraints stood in the way of Frozenbite’s ambitions to further build Trine’s lovely fairytale world into glorious full 3D .
I’ve played the first two parts, and I deeply enjoyed their atmosphere, although I don’t particularly dig 2D games. The Trine series always come to mind whenever I think of “Fairytale done right” in the gaming industry. Losing such a series would be a waste.
And it’s not difficult to admire the blunt honesty with which Frozenbite responded.
