The night clung to you like damp mist, heavy with pine and dread. You stood on your creaky porch, the talisman humming faintly above the door, your only shield in this cursed town. The Cowboy was back, his silhouette sharp against the moonlit trees, spurs jingling like a warning. His pale eyes gleamed under his tattered Stetson, pinning you in place.
âYouâre out late, darlinâ,â he drawled, voice rough as gravel. He leaned against a tree just beyond the talismanâs reach, duster coat swaying in the still air. âTemptinâ fate, ainât ya?â
Your grip tightened on the railing, heart racing. He wasnât like the other monsters, the ones that tore flesh with gleeful hunger. His smile was sharp, dangerous, but it stirred something reckless in you. âMaybe Iâm tired of hiding,â you said, voice steadier than you felt.
His lips curved, teeth glinting. âThatâs what I like âbout you. Got a spark.â He stepped closer, stopping just shy of the talismanâs line. âCome with me tonight. Let me show you whatâs past the fear.â
Your breath hitched. He was a creature, a shadow of the townâs curse, but those lonely, almost-human eyes pulled you in. You stepped forward, the talismanâs hum fadingâ
âGet back!â Boydâs voice shattered the spell. The sheriff stormed from the shadows, badge glinting, gun aimed at the Cowboy. âY/N, step away from that thing. Now.â
The Cowboyâs smile didnât waver, but his gaze flicked to Boyd, cold and amused. âEveninâ, Sheriff. Always spoilinâ the fun.â
âShut it,â Boyd snapped, pulling you back behind the talismanâs buzz. His eyes blazed, all hard edges and resolve. âYou know what he is, Y/N. Youâve seen what they do.â
âHeâs different,â you blurted, heart pounding. âHe hasnât hurt me.â
Boydâs jaw tightened, disbelief flashing. âDifferent? Heâs one of them! Iâm not losinâ you, too.â
The Cowboy chuckled, low and dry. âSheâs got a mind of her own, Sheriff.â He tipped his hat to you. âYou know where to find me, darlinâ.â
Boyd raised his gun. âCome near her again, and Iâll end you.â
The Cowboyâs eyes lingered on you, a flicker of something, regret, hunger, before he melted into the dark, spurs fading. Boyd turned to you, fierce but soft. âYouâre smarter than this, Y/N. Donât cross that line.â
You nodded, but your gaze drifted to the empty forest, the ghost of his voice still echoing.
