Charles had never been able to imagine himself falling in love. When others his age had been dreaming of grand romances and eternal companionship, all Charles had been able to muster up was a vague sort of sympathy for the future lady of his heart. After all, he knew that his work would always come first; that all he'd be able to spare of himself for someone else would be far less than anyone deserved of a husband. No, he'd much rather forgo the whole thing entirely than force through an arrangement that wouldn't work for the sake of what, appearances and formality?
That's why what he felt for Monty came as such a surprise.
Not only did he not expect it, he'd actively discarded the possibility of it ever happening at all. And even then... he'd thought, if in some strange turn of events he did end up entangled with someone, it'd be someone like him, who shared his interests and proclivities and would be able to slot effortlessly into his life without him having to give any of it up.
Monty was decidedly not like him. He was almost blindingly different. He clashed with him in almost every way. And yet... loving Monty was the easiest thing he'd ever done. That didn't mean that Monty himself was easy to deal with, but the simple, deeply personal love Charles felt for him was a font eternal, never failing him, even when he half-wished it might. There were times he would've liked to be able to keep a clearer head and stand his ground, times the other man appalled him and Charles didn't understand how the person he loved could say such things; how he could love a person who said such things, but he could and he did. There was no helping it. There was no reasoning his way out of it. Monty just had to give him a smile or look at him with the warmest of eyes, and Charles was no better than anyone else.
He supposed the easiest way of describing it was just that when he was with Monty, he didn't have to worry. He didn't have to act like someone he couldn't be, or try to fit in, or stumble over the right words to say. He could say nothing at all, if he wanted, and Monty would invariably fill the silence.

It REALLY hit home for me as someone who's had not so great parents.
