Sunday Morning Listening (SML) 137 ZZ Top -“Afterburner” Finally I made a full alphabetical selections from a to z. My only artist with Z letter until I get Frank Zappos’s. I remember, during MTV era, ZZ Top’s MV with their signature long beard, shades, hats and spinning guitars. Found lovely slow song, Rough Boy, in this release. Well go to the store, buy a big ass cowboy hat, and get ready to hold onto it because they’ve just released a new compilation of classic rippers from their now 50-year long career spanning the early roadhouse rock days, the 80’s era full of synths and music videos, and the contemporary works they’ve put out since. I know that a lot of you already love ZZ Top and probably know their best works (I’m lookin’ at you Tres Hombres) but I’m particularly excited about this greatest hits box because it would be the perfect introduction to the band for new collectors and music lovers that have either never listened to them, or worse yet, have only ever heard “Legs” (which still rips, but in no way gives you the full ZZ Top experience!). ⁠ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ The CD version and LP versions are sequenced a bit differently, but I can tell you that the LP version is mastered beautifully. There’s rhyme and reason to the ordering of tracks, but the general gist is that you’re going to get hit with the big tracks all at once in the beginning and it shows off how much this band evolved and changed over the decades they spanned. I’ll always prefer the real gritty roadhouse jukebox stuff but I also unabashedly love the big-budget 80’s MTV era too. ZZ Top "Live in Germany, 1980" 2xLP. I'm gonna preface this by stating I'm not much of a ZZ Top fan. I respect them, enjoy their 80's hits, and the "Tres Hombres" album but that's about it. However, a few years back I stumbled on video of their performance of "La Grange" on German TV show Rockpalast from 1980 and it blew my fucking socks off!! It was so mean and raw. Just balls out awesome. They were so tight! This UK release is sourced from that performance which also includes a smoking version of "Cheap Sunglasses" but sadly omits "Just Got Paid" which is a huge bummer because Billy Gibbons' slide work on that cut is awe inspiring. Even worse, its now even hard to find that performance on YouTube.
