Four Thieves Vinegar As the story goes, in the midst of the black plague, four thieves used this herbal remedy to fight off the plague. The grave robbers reputedly survived the plague untouched. What this really is... An immune system boosting, antibacterial, warming, and delicious herbal vinegar that works to support the body during cold and flu season. I cannot speak to it fighting off the plague but the story has made this folk remedy famous. Over the years, I have found as many recipes as there are gardeners, herbalists, and natural remedy aficionados. Below is the traditional list of ingredients from which I select what I have on hand, what is fresh/seasonal, or what particular flavor I am hoping to achieve. Feel free to add other herbs that interest you. This vinegar can be used to cook with, taken as a short term tonic, or made into delicious salad dressings and marinades. There is no separation of herbal medicine and the food we eat... it is all a part of our support system. As a tonic, take 1-2 Tablespoons, 1-2 times a day. The tonic is best for when everyone around you is getting sick, you are going through a stressful time, or with seasonal changes. For acute use, take 2-3 Tablespoons, 2-3 times a day. Perfect for those days when you wake up with that tell tale tickle in your throat. Mix the vinegar into hot or cold water, juice, or tea. A note : While vinegar is good for you, too much is not. Vinegar balances the pH of the body by using calcium from the body. Too much may impact your bones and teeth. Ingredients Lavender Garlic Sage Oregano or Marjoram Thyme Rosemary In Apple Cider Vinegar How to Make In a jar add equal parts of each herbs to fill the jar to about 2/3. Pour in Apple Cider Vinegar to cover plus an inch. Gently stir to release air bubbles. Herbs should be filling the jar but still free floating. Any air trapped between leaves could allow mold to grow. Place a piece of parchment or wax paper between the lid and the jar to prevent the vinegar from interacting with the metal lid. Cover with a tight fitting lid. Let this sit for three weeks in a warmish location where you will walk by often. Shake the jar at least once a day. Finally, strain and bottle after three weeks. Be sure to label the bottle with ingredients and date made.
