The title comes from this snippet (which was actually the first part of this I wrote):

     "Magic isn't magic. It isn't rabbits and hats and silk scarves and disappearing women in trick boxes. It’s light and darkness and singer and song. It's power; the lifeblood of the world. 

     Long ago shinobi learned how to harness the power inside themselves. They called it chakra and jutsu. They didn't call it magic. But it was magic all the same, even if it was only a small faction of possibility.

It is alive and dead and grieving and gone. The dead went like a fading note, like a dream in the sun."

The premise of the fic is there are fairy-tale esq magic in the Naruto world, complete with ways to bring back the dead, but most don’t know it.  I mean ways where people have to make deals with, for lack of a better word, witches where they have to complete some task to get what they want.

There would definitely be some time-limit, so when Tobirama finds out then it’s too late to bring back his brothers, but he can go and do something when Izuna dies.  He pushes it by staying to help set up Konoha, but as soon as he can rushes off to find a witch to make a deal, probably two so that Izuna is brought back right away.  The witch would be delighted by this because if Tobirama fails in the task, s/he gets him.

I’m thinking that Tobirama basically gets the Swan Brothers deal-  he has to make a shirt (or in this maybe a full kimono?) out of something like nettle (something very nasty to work with, not to mention even touch) without communicating (in the fairy-tale it was that she couldn’t talk, but let’s make Tobirama’s life hard) and he only has, like, a year.

(Madara has also pissed off the witch so he keeps having to save a very frustrated Tobirama from various fairy-tale dangers, but that’s kinda a different topic all together)

The pairing was intended to be MadaTobi but I haven't written that much.

What I've written so far:

    It starts like this. With four boys becoming friends. This in and of itself is not anything special but you know who these boys are in the scale of things. You know even if I haven't told you yet.   

     It's almost like, magic. 

     Magic isn't magic. It isn't disappearing rabbits and silk scarves and pretty women in trick boxes. It is light and darkness and singer and song. It is power, pure and simple. The lifeblood of the world. 

      Long ago the shinobi managed to understand a portion of the power inside of themselves. They sought to tame it, to control it. They called it chakra and jutsu and scoffed at the notion of magic. It was magic all the same. After all refusal to acknowledge something rarely changes it.  It was magic, even if it was only a small portion of possibility. 

    There were others who turned their focus outwards as the shinobi turned theirs within. 

      People fear that which they do not understand and those who strive to understand it are seen as radicals, as dangerous to the social order. Those who sought out the magic in the world were driven to the fringes even as they became all the more common. The shinobi remained through brutal strength and a refusal to bow. 

      From these shinobi, many clans arose and there were many fights as well you know, but there were few that caught the magics attention the way the Senju and the Uchiha did. 

    Those with power can easily grow drunk on it and those who are powerful are rarely willing to share with others. The Senju and the Uchiha fought for generations before something changed. 

     What most don't know is that Senju Tobirama and Uchiha Izuna meet first.

With all this roaring, they're probably wondering whether they've resurrected Godric Gryffindor by mistake.

Summary: The Founders, whatever their faults, are first and foremost educators. And, er, immortal, sort of, but that's a long story. After a thousand years, they've decided to see how their baby, their first big project, Hogwarts, turned out. Boy, are they unhappy.

Notes:

- I've messed with the Harry Potter timeline a bit so I can have tech like smartphones and reference social movements that occur in the age of the internet. Because I like the idea of a techaddict!Rowena. 

- 1000 years is a long time. People sometimes forget that, I think.
