The 100E Escort and its sister car the Squire 100E were two door four seat small Estate cars. There had previously been Utelicon conversions of the Ford 5cwt van, but these were Fords first factory built small wagons. related to the Ford Prefect 100E four-door saloon, sharing the same 1,172 cc (71.5 cu in) Ford sidevalve 36 bhp (27 kW) engine and other parts, they used the short doors of the four door Saloon because the bodyshell was optimized for use as a panel van (which was marketed as the Thames 300E). The rear door was in two pieces split horizontally. The rear seat could be folded flat to convert from a four-seater to a load carrier. The Squire was the more expensive of the pair, better trimmed and competing in the same market sector as the Hillman Husky and Austin A30 / A35 based estate, both significantly more popular in the UK than longer estates at the time. The Ford Prefect was upgraded for the 1960 model year and redesignated the model code 107E. Utilizing a reworked 100E body with the then-new 997 cc OHV engine, four speed gearbox, it main purpose was to provide Ford with a four door model until replaced by the Ford Consul Classic. Most were finished in two tone colour schemes and Deluxe trim. Mechanically the cars had 8 inch diameter hydraulically operated drum brakes and the suspension was independent at the front using MacPherson struts. The rear driven axle used semi elliptic leaf springs. The Ford Prefect 100E was alongside the similar Ford Anglia heralding a much more modern look to the entry level of the Ford range. Structurally the twin of the Anglia 100E 1954-59 with different grilles the Anglia being two door and the Prefect four door. McPherson front suspension struts, semi elliptic rear suspension and a unitary body. The redesigned engines with pump cooling, are still the long stroke flatheads. Ride stopping powers and handling are vastly improved. Both cars are also built on an 87 inch wheelbase which makes for narrow doors particularly on the four door Prefect. The four doors and convex vertical barred grille identifies the Prefect from the Anglia. In 1955 an estate car version was introduced, marketed as the Ford Squire and mechanically identical to the contemporary Escort, an estate car version of the Ford Anglia 100E, but with wooden strakes and a higher trim level.
