Mechanically the same as the rest of the 100E family (Anglia, Escort, Squire and Popular) with McPherson strut front suspension, semi-elliptics at the rear, the Ford long stroke flat head side valve engine, three speed gearbox (some late Anglia and Prefects had a two pedal system) and curious vacuum powered windscreen wipers. The Prefect was the deluxe four door member of the family also identified by its convex vertical barred grille which it shares with the Squire Estate car The Motor magazine tested a de-luxe 100E in 1957 and recorded a top speed of 71 mph (114 km/h) and acceleration from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 32.2 seconds. A touring fuel consumption of 33.1 miles per gallon (imperial) was recorded. On the home market it cost £658 including taxes of £220 The Prefect 100E was reworked for model years 1959-61 as the Ford Prefect 107E with the new 997cc overhead valve engine, four-speed gearbox and 'banjo' style rear end from the Anglia 105E, produced to offer a four-door model until replaced by the Ford Consul Classic. On test, The Motor magazine recorded a top speed of 73 mph (117 km/h) and acceleration from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 27.2 seconds.
