Yes we did. they just weren't in the news and people who know nothing about computers and network infrastructure weren't discoursing about them.
#My dad was a data center engineer for a consumer technology company in the mid 2000s...#Also 4k video is not the only cause of big data centers either#Part of things is that every company in the world is generating vast amounts of internal records and Data#Financial records. Consumer data. Healthcare shit is massive for this. Etc.#As well as whatever their online services are. And all of that needs to be stored somewhere#It did used to be that a lot of companies would run their own data centers for these internal records#But many companies have said 'well. We're a Healthcare comany-- we don't really want to have to have this whole staff of like#HVAC specialists who will keep our servers happy#For example.#So we'll pay Microsoft Azure or whoever to store all our data and run the buildings it lives in etc'#So there has been an industry shift towards consolidation#Which like ironically is probably somewhat more energy efficient etc than each company running its own small data center#Economies of scale and all#But it does mean that everybody is paying for and relying on Microsoft Google etc to keep their shit running#natalie does textposts
