50 years ago... June 11, 1973 Starcity - Moscow, cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov pose in the Soyuz simulator wearing their brand new "bulky" Omega flightmaster pilot chronographs. During the 1973 Paris Air show, cosmonauts Leonov and Kubasov were announced as the prime crew for the upcoming ASTP Apollo-Soyuz Test Project spaceflight mission. A historic flight during which by 1975 NASA astronauts and cosmonauts would work together in docked spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit. On May 22, a cosmonaut delegation, lead by Aleksei Yeliseyev, had visited the Omega Headquarters in Bienne - Switzerland during which they were shown the flightmaster pilot watches, Speedmaster chronographs and Alaska II Project Speedmaster in distinctive red outer cases.Between 1974 - 1978, Russian cosmonauts used all these Omega wrist watches in space but Omega "sold" the name "flightmaster" to Seiko. September 7, 1974 ASTP crews visit President Gerald Ford - Washington DC. Prior to their September 10-25 fortnight tour of NASA facilities, ASTP astronauts & cosmonauts visited the White House for a meeting with the 38th US President Gerald Ford. Alexei Leonov was pictured using his Bolex Pallard H16 camera. Besides NASA facilities, the ASTP crews also visited Walt Disney World in Florida and the Shoshone Indians in Wyoming. Although the Soviet-Russian cosmonauts clearly prefered the Omega Flightmaster pilot watch, NASA decided that both ASTP crews had to use the same Omega chronographs on their wrists. In this way, a total of eleven official Speedmaster chronographs were used as the three NASA astronauts were issued the classic caliber 361 and the two cosmonauts each wore two of the newer caliber 861 Speedmaster (reference ST 145.022) watches. Russian commander Alexey Leonov carried a third Speedmaster chronograph. In fact, ASTP was the last manned US space mission until the first Space Shuttle flight in April 1981, but the project set a precedent for future cooperation with both Russian and European space agencies. 50 years IAF meeting in Lucerne - Switzerland During the 26-30 September 1971 IAF - International Aeronautical Federation conference, both Apollo 13 astronauts and Soyuz 9 cosmonauts were awarded Medals and IAF diplomas. NASA astronaut James Lovell received the Gold Space medal, IAF’s highest award for his courageous achievements & leadeship as the Apollo 13 commander. During the event, which got a huge domestic press coverage, James Lovell and Vitaly Sevastyanov rode the Mount Pilatus suspension cogwheel railway as the press headlined “For the very first time in space history an American astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut ride in the same cabin”. Omega SA certainly took note and deemed Switzerland, with its self-imposed neutrality, was the ideal place for meet-ups between astronauts & cosmonauts. Two years later, Soviet-Russian cosmonauts were invited to the Omega HQ in Bienne to be showcased several wristwatches to support Soyuz spaceflight missions... two years later cosmonauts were wearing Omega Flightmaster, Omega Speedmaster and Speedmaster Mk III.
