Google has brought a long-running but often overlooked feature to a much bigger audience: the Google Earth Flight Simulator can now be used directly in a web browser. Instead of downloading desktop software, users can jump into the simulator from the Google Earth website and start flying over 3D maps of real-world locations.

The original flight simulator first appeared inside Google Earth back in 2007 as a hidden feature. The new browser-based version is being presented as an experimental experience that's free to use and accessible through standard web browsers. Players can navigate using a keyboard and mouse while exploring cities, landmarks, mountains, and coastlines from the air.

It's not trying to compete with dedicated simulation games that focus on realism and advanced aircraft systems. The appeal here is simplicity: pick a location, take off, and fly around the planet using Google's detailed mapping data. Early reactions online ranged from people enjoying the sightseeing aspect to others joking about repeatedly crashing their virtual planes.
