I just heard "draw a flegg in Snoopy's big coat" then I passed out.
My Secret Samol gift to @toomanyrubberduckies, who requested plushies of any funny little guys. Flegg Time!
Happy Secret Samol season to all who celebrate! This is my third year participating, my first year not getting a prompt about Lyke, and my most ambitious project so far.
The prompt I selected was ‘where the star fell’ for the current Perpetua season of Friends at the Table. I tried to capture the shifting landscape around the star as it was described in the podcast.
“Falling stars are the origins of what we all know as Celestial Echoes, which are these strange environments that get brought into being when a falling star lands. The place that this kind of meteoric energy, you know, alights to the ground, completely transforms. In this case, you can smell it before you can see it: these tropical floral smells begin to waft through the air in the distance. Celestial Echoes are places where the world has changed into some other vision of reality, a localized dimensional rift.” (Thank you, episode transcribers)
There were so many French knots involved in this and hours of stitching! After laying down the base layers of appliqué that sketched out the landscape, I started with the falling star, which is my favorite part.
I tried to blur the boundaries between the original plains and the swampy Celestial Echo landscape, which is where I struggled the most. I did enjoy layering tulle to get a watery effect, though.
I wanted to add more to the border, so I ended up adding embroidered icons of things related to the scene, including the vampire orchid and a butterfly that inspired creatures in a later battle sequence and a hand holding the star anchor collected after the fight.
There is also a tiny image of the Little Snail making its way down the road. I don’t think the snail aspect of the truck is supposed to be so literal, but I thought it was cuter this way.
And the last step was to put a large flegg on the back panel.
I had a lot of fun doing this. Everyone please ignore the cat hair (I tried and failed to get all of it off) and appreciate that I went outside in the Minnesota winter to get some decent natural light for photos.
Lastly, thanks to glenatron on Bluesky for the prompt.
