UUuuuuh, a very interesting question. It… depends a bit on the kind and servery of the breakdown.

Usually they keep their humanoid form and color. If there is more despair/fear/hopelessness in it, their flame color could drop, if there is more anger in it, they could flare up.

Also they could lose control over themselves, their flames could flare more or they could use more and more of their humanoid form. That happens pretty seldom thou. Fire elemental fire is not just “normal fire pressed into form”, it’s magical fire. But if they loose all control over themselves they could lash out and hurt/burn people around them.

Swabby is the least likely to do so, his breakdowns are more internal. His flames will go lower and well, he will cry. Badly. (you saw one of his breakdowns in THIS chapter) He would try and hide away too but he really just wants to be comforted but has next to no idea how to ask for that. (Luckily he got Grillby there to help him out)

Fellby’s breakdowns tend to be more violent. He will try and flee and lash out at anybody around him (the LOVE kinda fuels that too) but he can also break down and just cry and go really apathetic afterwards. He has even less clue on how to tell somebody he needs help or how to ask or even accept affection and help. He barely understands himself if he goes into a breakdown. But in most cases he feels actually better afterwards. (Sometimes he just goes to his cave and cuddle Soup and cry himself out, sometimes he just hides somewhere or goes to the lava pools and tries to forget about what made him upset. Later he will turn to Swabby or Grillby for comfort even if he very seldom tells them what is wrong.)

Grillby’s breakdowns are the most dangerous. Minor ones usually are silent ones, he won’t speak and hold onto anybody close to him (mostly Swabby) to try and ground himself. Bigger ones could be crying and wordless screaming. Also his LOVE could try and take over, making him want to lash out and destroy, a none-flame could be really in danger if close to him at that state because Grillby won’t be able to keep all of his flames under control. (When he feels an breakdown coming he will most likely leave the house and go into the Snowdin forest to not hurt anybody and to have enough cold and snow around him to suppress his LOVE)The most dangerous breakdown Grillby could suffer… he could go practically mindless. Kinda like a fire golem, his body would twist and change and his mind would be filled just with his LOVE. He would be highly dangerous in that state. He was only once in that state when Sylvan died. He must have looked like the hellfire itself in that state, body twisted and grown and just mindless killing everything around him… (he was lucky to come back from that. He just woke up later in a crater, surrounded by ash and dust and his LOVE doubled)

(It’s mostly due to how LOVE works in our universe. LOVE twists a soul and acts like a virus, the more LOVE you have to more LOVE you want to have. It influences you and your thoughts and actions. In theory, all elementals can reach this golem state. Grillby was one of the very few that survived this state. Usually an elemental that went that far would rage until their magic is all used up and die.)

So yeah… they MOSTLY keep their form and their flames change a bit with their emotions. If LOVE is in it too, well… all kinds of horrible stuff could happen.
