I caught Fitzgerald looking at Ranpo like this in my Mayoi lineup:
And now I'm consumed by the idea of Fitzgerald and Ranpo hitting it off at the ADA Christmas party (why Fitzgerald is there no one knows but it seems like half their enemies turned out for the eggnog and he's the least of their worries), and as they're chatting by the hearth or whatever they fail to notice Louisa and Fukuzawa staring at them.
And then Fitzgerald says something in passing to Fukuzawa on his way out about Ranpo being a delight and that he "understands why Fukuzawa would want to keep him around forever," and that's the straw that broke the camel's back. Louisa turns up the next day to invite Fukuzawa into her 12 step Francis and Ranpo Breakup Plan or stay the hell out of her way. And so the two embark on a joint venture to break them up.
What they don't know is that Fitzgerald is just reminded of his daughter when he hangs out with Ranpo and Ranpo has identified a friend who also doesn't understand how to use public transportation.
They think it's very cute when they discover Louisa and Fukuzawa on step 8 of their plan, though. (Ok Ranpo knew it was happening all along and it was half his reasoning for being friends with Fitzgerald let's be real.)

Summary:Â Alcott has trouble sleeping once she moves out of that apartment with Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald moves them out of their tiny apartment and into a âproperâ gargantuan office building as soon as possible.
Alcott canât say she minds too much. Â Fitzgeraldâs always stressed the value of being close to your work space if an emergency comes up. Â Besides that, Alcott likes her privacy, likes having her own room (bigger than the entire apartment) to retreat to when she needs it. Â Her bedroom, which used to be an office before Fitzgerald added a comfortable bed, a dresser, a desk, and a flatscreen TV, is more luxurious than Alcott needs. Â But he likes spoiling his subordinates, she knows. Â Itâs one of the things she admires about him.
The only complaint she might have - a trivial one - is that she doesnât sleep as close to Fitzgerald now.
When they were in that tiny space, they naturally slept close together: there was simply no other option. Â She could hear his breathing, and it lulled her to sleep. Â The moment she woke up, she could see that he was still well, still here. Â Nothing had hurt him.
Now sheâs down the hall from him. Â A lengthy hall. Â If something were to happen-
She wouldnât be able to do anything either way. Â Her ability is useless for combat, and the closest thing to a weapon sheâs ever learned how to use is a kitchen knife. Â Even if she worries, it doesnât make a difference how far she is from him. Â She canât help.
The knowledge makes the first three nights uneasy for her, no matter how comfortable her bed is. Â She falls into a restless sleep eventually, and since her usual morning state is ânot functional until she gets a coffee in herâ, Fitzgerald doesnât notice.
On the fourth night, just after sheâs changed into her nightgown, someone knocks on her door. Â Itâs Fitzgerald - he always knocks the same way, two sharp and quick knocks that suggest that that should be enough for you to hurry to answer him.
With Alcott, it always is. Â She opens the door for him. Â âMr. Fitzgerald? Â What do you need?â
Fitzgerald is wearing gold and green silk pajamas, his personal favorite. Â âI hope I didnât wake you, Ms. Alcott.â
âNot at all!â Â Sheâs pretty sure she would say the same thing if heâd knocked at four in the morning and sheâd had to drag herself out of bed, but in this case itâs the truth.
âI hate to bother you, but Iâve been having trouble getting to sleep lately,â Fitzgerald says. Â âSince we moved to this building, in fact.â
âM-me too,â Alcott admits, and then hastens to make sure Fitzgerald isnât insulted. Â âBut itâs not your furniture choices! Â I think this is the most comfortable bed Iâve ever slept on.â
âTheyâre top of the line mattresses that respond automatically to your optimal softness for deep sleep. Â I used to own the company,â Fitzgerald says with pride. Â âSo it canât be the beds. Â Iâve slept in office buildings many times before, so it canât be that...â Â His expression softens, just a little. Â âI wonder if I became used to sleeping next to you?â
Alcottâs face goes bright red instantly. Â She has no reply to that and sheâs sure that if she opened her mouth, all that would come out would be squeaks.
Sleeping next to each other when you have to is one thing. Â Sleeping next to each other by choice, thatâs entirely different!
âWe ought to test out the theory, anyway,â Fitzgerald says, as relaxed as ever. Â âA few of the bedrooms have pairs of queen-sized beds rather than the single bed you have. Â Will that be fine?â
...If theyâre in separate beds, then everything should be okay, and Alcott does want to get some sleep. Â More importantly, she canât stand the idea of being the reason Fitzgerald isnât resting properly. Â She nods.
âGrand!â Fitzgerald says. Â âI had room 104 prepared for us earlier. Â You can move your things tomorrow, if it works as planned.â
The bedroom Fitzgerald leads her to is just as expensively furnished. Â She canât appreciate it properly because sheâs too busy climbing into bed and pulling the covers high enough to hide her blush.
Fitzgerald takes his time getting ready - Alcott gives thanks that he was already in his pajamas - but eventually he climbs into bed and turns off the light. Â âGoodnight, Ms. Alcott.â
âG-goodnight, Mr. Fitzgerald.â
When she wakes, sheâs refreshed, for an entire second before she remembers that sheâs going to be sharing a room with Fitzgerald again.
